Why Intentional Tourists Reject One-Click Vacations: Human over AI travel Planning?

Intentional tourists appreciate the human-human relationships in travel planning, valuing personalized guidance, emotional intelligence, and expert insight that technology can enhance—but never replace—in creating purposeful travel experiences.

Typos ahead! This was typed by me, not a robot, so blame the coffee-fueled human brain.

Like a big number of niche business owners, I am cautious about fully replacing human interaction with technology in travel operations. While I understand technology’s potential, I believe in humans helping fellow humans. My preference for personal connection in travel planning is not due to resistance to change, but a belief in its enduring value.

Not all, I am a fan of measurable adaption or you can call it adjustment.

What does this mean for me as a travel business owner?

We can all agree that the majority of fellow travel professionals agree that travel is about people by people. Not a fun slogan for tech product firms, particularly in this AI-driven era.

Returning to tourism fundamentals, we should ensure our use of technology serves—not replaces—the human core of travel businesses.

Call them old-fashioned business owners, but one thing I am sure of, they know what they are doing. And most importantly, the tourists appreciate these human-human relationships.

If you consider a techy professional working in Silicon Valley taking a vacation somewhere around the world, the last thing they would wish is interacting with a chatbot to confirm travel plans. They miss the normal way of doing things. The reason they are probably taking the vacation itself is to get away from the tech room talks.

By the way, why do Intentional Tourists take overseas adventures and vacations?

In my 15 years of chatting with travelers from every corner of this world, one thing that comes back in the conversation is” wow, here life is different! ”

Just because everything seems to be ruled by a materialist mindset does not mean everyone functions that way.

The value of life is not about how financially wealthy someone is. Some travel experiences humble not because we find ourselves in travel destinations that don’t match the so-called modern life index. The raw beauty of nature makes some destinations even infectious.

Forget about skyscrapers, modern high-end infrastructures, but those human experiences, cultural and historical lessons that often prove us wrong on this notion of travel experience.

If you take an overseas trip with your preschoolers, you are providing them with something the kindergarten won’t. You are attending the same school with your children: the school of life. Everybody learns lessons at their own level of understanding.

Believe me, nobody comes back home with just a collection of beach or wildlife snapshots.

Back to AI-invaded travel territory and its repercussions on the very nature of travel experience.

How do you expect to learn if the trip itself you are taking was designed by unnatural circumstances?

If I say unnatural circumstances, I am referring to the essence of tourism:”  trips are taken by people, planned by and for people”.

What does this mean in a practical sense?

Good vacations for couples aren’t found in AI-driven results.

Humans will always need humans to solve human needs. Weekend trips for couples or any type of travelers you may be don’t require the same planning structure as an overseas trip.

A quick weekend trip that you may take on Friday, being back home on Sunday, doesn’t need much attention. It is usually thenear me spot or weekend getaways close to me that come to mind. No visa, flight, or travel insurance complications involved.

Not to say the best getaways for couples must be international vacations.  Not at all, every couple traveling together has reasons to move for a few days out of their regular place.

One of the reasons couples take international trips is to see the world together. Learning as a couple, besides the regular backyard stories or experiences pave a way for collective development as a family or couple.

A couple on overseas trips will need humans to understand human travel needs.

Nothing beats custom travel itineraries for couples. This brings the need to define what they want to do, destinations to go to, or places to explore. The ideal tourist destination that suits both goes beyond finding hidden sunbathing spots, white sand beaches, the Greek islands, or securing a last-minute deal on a Galapagos Islands cruise.

Luxury Couple Travel Self-Identity and Emotional Fulfillment

A personalized couple travel planning requires the human touch, not AI automation.

The fact is, couples traveling on the same trip know what they want to achieve as a couple and as individuals. Below is an email excerpt of a client request that shows exactly what human solutions for human travel needs mean.

“So, I spoke with my wife we would be interested in the one in June. What specific dates would that be? Also just want to be sure I’m grasping what you said in the last email, we would have to get our flight into Kigali on the first day, get the flight from Kigali to Bujumbura on day 5 and our departing flight on day 7 but outside of visas everything else is covered and it is $US 4982  per person so we would be looking at $US 9964 for the both of us?”

One common aspect of aggregating travel sites is that similar tour itineraries.

What is this, not the solution for all travelers? No matter how powerful the technological advancement will be, it cannot solve travel problems in most cases.

There is a subtle, powerful element in the above email. The couple planning the trip is having a conversation with the actual person who will run the tour. On their arrival day, the meeting won’t be just a sort of” blind date” but a reconnection. The sense of humanity and rapport started when the first email exchange occurred.

This is something trips planned through an AI chatbot won’t afford. There is a often lie that often drives travelers crazy. That fast and simplified “Book Your Seat Now” CTA.

That makes considers tourism a mere transactional industry, which is far from being so.

A couple’s vacation itinerary confirmed by a human Guest Experience Manager.

Back in the days as a hotel front manager, we had a routine of sending a list to the housekeeping manager of guests checking in every morning with expected arrival times.

That was a human taking care of another human’s travel needs. A couple traveling to Mauritius for a romantic adventure will love a cultural gift as a welcome, ushering them into the cultural experiences of the Island.

When was the last time you received a welcome or trip confirmation letter with a human signature?

That warmth expressed in that email reassures that the whole travel experience is just to be a blast.

Guests remember the name of that exceptional guide or customer service representative who made the whole travel planning as smooth as it was.

“We took a 14-day custom safari that started from Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi in October 2024. We would like to thank Kelly for her excellent and well-thought-out tour itinerary, comfortable accommodations, and smart-paced activities. The star of the whole adventure is Gaston, who ensured that the experience goes beyond the mere  itinerary.”

It is that name that they will remember and associate with the destination. In the end, people are what make destinations and brands unforgettable.
