From the Balkans to Eastern Europe, there are countless destinations that travelers avoid simply because of reputation, not reality. But those who choose to explore beyond these misconceptions often discover something far more valuable: genuine human connection, rich culture, and experiences that feel real rather than curated.

This article explores the best European travel destinations that are misunderstood yet incredibly rewarding. If you’re looking for hidden gems, safer-than-you-think countries, and authentic travel experiences in Europe, these places deserve a spot on your list.

Traveling to Albania became one of my most meaningful travel experiences.

One region that still carries an unfair “scary” reputation is the Balkans. Even recently, I’ve seen how strong those fears remain. A few months ago, my sister-in-law was on a bachelorette trip departing from Nice when she discovered they had a stopover in Belgrade. She panicked at the airport, screamed that she’s not setting one foot in Serbia, convinced it was dangerous and that she’d end up dead. Another relative is traveling to Albania soon and keeps hearing warnings about the safety situation.

I had the same reactions before my first trip to the Balkans years ago. But what I found was the opposite.

In Shkoder, Albania, I ended up leaving my group for a couple of days and exploring on my own with locals I had just met. It could have been risky. Instead, it became one of my most meaningful travel experiences. We shared long conversations and daily life. And we still keep in touch today. That level of openness and generosity stayed with me.

I also come from Romania, another place people often misunderstand. (Southern Romania is also considered part of the Balkans.) Many still expect a grey, unsafe, post-communist environment. However, what they find is a city full of life, with a rich cultural scene (mostly free, too), and welcoming people, especially in cities like Bucharest.

These experiences reshaped how I see “unsafe” destinations. Often, the biggest risk is missing out. The Balkans are safe to explore and also rich in human connection, culture, and authenticity. I’ve even planned a long camper trip through the region with my husband and our toddler, which says everything about the level of trust I have in traveling there.

Is Albania Safe for Tourists? A Real Travel Experience

I Was Told Not to Travel to Albania – I Ended Up Moving Here

by Harel Kopelman

Before I visited Albania for the first time in 2021, nearly everyone I spoke to warned me against it – the country was described as dangerous, unstable, and full of crime (think: drug dealers & mafia bosses). In Europe in particular, Albanians have a bad reputation, so I arrived expecting to keep my guard up. Instead, I found something completely different.

Within days, strangers were going out of their way to help me – walking me to destinations, inviting me for coffee, and treating me with a level of warmth I hadn’t experienced anywhere else (definitely not in New York, where I used to live).

What struck me most was the cultural concept of “besa,” an Albanian word meaning “keeping your word” or “honor;” it’s a deep-rooted value of hospitality that translates into a genuine commitment to care for others, especially foreigners.

I kept experiencing this warmth and hospitality, which was such a foreign experience to me, coming from New York. It eventually led me to build my life here. I now write a Substack, The Albania Dispatch, where I document the culture and everyday realities of the country.

I fell in love with the local culture so much that I co-founded Albanian Night, a cultural experience dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional Albanian music and heritage. Both these initiatives came directly from how welcome I felt, how kind Albanians are, and how safe the country is.

Hidden Gem Cities in Eastern Europe Worth Visiting

Odesa felt like a historic European city with a seaside promenade.

In a bid to reach 40 countries and having visited 38 so far, I visited Moldova (country 39), crossed the border into Ukraine (country 40), and spent 3 days in Odesa.  Odesa is portrayed as a dangerous, war-torn place, but in reality, it felt like a historic European city with a seaside promenade, classical architecture, and endless street markets.

Places in Europe That Are Safer Than People Think

The locals were incredibly friendly, defying the stoic Eastern European stereotype, and were simply going about their daily lives in relative normality.  I found that everyone from hotel staff, to shop assistants to servers in restaurants were determined to give me a positive experience.

They offered countless recommendations, shared hidden gems, and even their phone numbers in case I needed help or needed further recommendations.

A highlight of my trip was the Museum of Modern Art of Odesa, which showcased several exhibitions by Ukrainian artists.  Another highlight was wandering the tree-lined streets with architecture akin to Paris or Vienna, rather than anything soviet, and coming across things such as an outdoor book market on Ukrainskykh Heroiv Avenue.

Finally, Odesa is a city that takes coffee seriously; it was common to see coffee shops packed at 9 pm.  My personal favourite was Foundation Coffee Place, with its double entendre tagline, ‘support your local caffeine dealer’.
