Most travelers spend more time searching for safety tips before even considering where to book vacation packages. And that’s for obvious reasons. There are many “unsafe destinations around the world, depending on where you get the information from. And we call it a travel advisory or a practical guide for safety tips.

The truth is that safe destinations do not have a universally accepted definition. I may feel safe to travel in the Caribbean, while another traveler feels the opposite.

Speaking of a particular destination in Latin America, Mexico makes headlines in travel magazines.

Search engines know how much traffic travel safety in Mexico brings. Travelers spend hours scanning new headlines and travel stories, all trying to make a judgment if a trip to Mexico is something to reconsider for the future or not.

There is nothing wrong with comparing travel warnings vs travel experiences about destinations before committing. It is something everybody does, or at least should.  Every meaningful travel experience should start with confidence and a peaceful mindset, not feeling like you are forced to travel. In the end, we travel for different reasons and goals. Whatever travel goals you have, a smooth experience comes as a common denominator.

Before her trip, Amy Poulton, like any traveler, searched for every possible travel information about Mexico that she could imagine.

And this goes from but not limited to “is Mexico City safe for tourists” to “is Mérida, Mexico safe”, and try to understand different guides on what to know before traveling to Mexico.

But there is one thing very few people will tell you: the narrative around “scary” destinations often says more about perception than reality. While people have plenty of reasons to debate the safest cities in Mexico for tourists, some arguments lack firsthand insights.

Those easy-to-pass narratives often overlook the everyday experiences that don’t make headlines: the unexpected kindness of locals, the sense of community, and those quiet moments that redefine everything you thought you knew about a destination.

This is far from another Mexico City travel guide or a checklist of things to do in Mexico City, Mérida, and Uxmal. It’s a different angle of what traveling to Mexico feels like, a story that challenges often easily accepted fear packaged in a safety advisory.

The story takes us through lived firsthand travel experiences in Mexico and an honest observation of what scary destinations could mean.

While it is centered around Mexico travel tips for first-timers wanting to know more than safety warnings, this is in no way a green light to travel everywhere in Mexico without due diligence.

“Solo Traveling to Mexico Despite Warnings– My Honest Experience in Mexico City, Mérida & Uxmal”

Mexico is one of the “scary” destinations with positive experiences | Destination: Mexico City, Mérida, and Uxmal

by Amy Poulton

I traveled to Mexico in 2017 after being warned by friends, family, and public figures (like Donald Trump) that it would be dangerous. My experience couldn’t have been more different; it was defined by generosity, community, and genuine kindness.

Before arriving, I met a Mexican backpacker in a San Francisco hostel. When I reached Mexico City, she welcomed me like an old friend, showed me around, and even hosted me in her apartment. That set the tone for everything that followed.

During my stay, I experienced two major earthquakes in Mexico City. What I witnessed afterward was extraordinary: locals organized quickly, turning parks into supply hubs while volunteers and cyclists delivered aid across blocked streets. Strangers checked on one another constantly; it was a powerful display of unity and compassion.

Later, in Mérida, a group of us got stranded after visiting Uxmal when buses failed to show. A local man traveling with his young son stopped and offered us a ride. Though hesitant at first, we accepted. He was warm, eager to chat, and safely dropped us in the town square, refusing any payment.

That trip completely reshaped my perspective on “scary” destinations.
