It comes as no surprise that most destinations with war-tied pasts are often wrongly labeled. Who’s there to remake the destination image? Those candid, firsthand kind voices that tell stories that show what “Scary myths vs reality” mean from the locals and travelers’ perspectives.

Why general travel guides fall short, but a Colombia travel guide with safety tips and local insights helps?

Over the last six years, we have been slow traveling through more than 20 countries, but we got the most warnings when we decided to travel to Colombia for three months.

Thinking, “Is it really going to be so dangerous?”, we found the opposite to be true, by meeting the most friendly, welcoming, and generous locals in Colombia’s countryside.

On one hike, we made our way to the waterfall Cueva del Esplendor from Jardin, a small town in Colombia’s Coffee Region.

The hike was much longer than expected, and it started pouring rain on the way back. While Allan was still in good spirits, I already knew that I would be in trouble.

Luckily, a truck appeared out of nowhere, and the friendly farmer driving it stopped to offer us a ride.

He only spoke Spanish, but he smiled the whole time, pointed to the dark sky, and handed us fruits he had behind his seat, probably picked from his own farm.

Before dropping us at our hotel, he drove past the local hospital, which he pointed at energetically through the window. Unfortunately, we couldn’t understand what he was trying to tell us due to our limited Spanish.

But once we got out and watched his truck drive away, we saw that we had been picked up in an old ambulance!

We realized he had been telling us his truck was the town’s ambulance for many years, which made the whole moment feel even more like a rescue.

We will always be grateful for this stranger’s kindness, and this experience shaped the way we experienced and remember Colombia, despite so many people warning us to go.

Hidden Safe Places to Visit in Colombia Where Locals Welcome You Like Family

Choosing to travel to Colombia despite the fear: Colombia was nothing like the “scary” stories I had heard, by Haley.

I’ve actually had quite a few places I was told were “scary”, unsafe, or just generally bad places to visit (like El Salvador, Boston, San Francisco, Mexico City, etc.), and I went to all of them anyways and loved them, but one place I really spent a lot of time because I moved there for a little while to teach english was Colombia.

I think because of the country’s violent past, only 30 years ago, people still thought Colombia was extremely dangerous, so I was constantly questioned when I said I was going to move there.

I ignored all their concerns, applied through an English teaching company, and was placed in the Coffee Region of Colombia. I taught at a small school up in the hot spring mountain area of Santa Rosa de Cabal, lived down the mountain in the bigger city of Pereira, and traveled around nearly the entire country on my own (as a young-looking female), and I had an amazing time everywhere I went.

Finding Connection, Community, and Kindness in Colombia Travel Experiences

I loved the almost all boys school I taught at and the students were awesome, I made friends and played regular soccer games with a bunch of Colombian women, I easily traveled on my own and met incredibly kind and helpful people along the way, and I even volunteered in some of the more impoverished areas but had wonderful times getting to know the people and helping them out a bit.

One blog post I have on why Colombia is worth visiting details the kind and friendly people a little more.

Colombia was nothing like the “scary” stories I had heard, of course I was still extremely cautious, like I would be anywhere in the world, but it was most definitely one of my life’s greatest experiences, and I’m so glad I went through with it despite all of the concerns.
