One supreme and non-negotiable criterion for new or experienced travelers is safety. You don’t look for a pre-packaged adventure or a generic itinerary that every adult, solo, or couple would book with a 3-click step.

Regardless of the destination, you need to find the right source of information.

This article explores the complexities of adventure for parents traveling with children, the child’s routine and nap needs, learning through nature, culture, history, travel insurance, and itinerary flexibility.

Adventure Doesn’t Stop When You Have Kids

If you are that person, probably young, as I am writing, who gauges if building a family will impede your travel bug, or let me put it in another adventure-suitable way, building a family and having kids will be the end of the overseas adventure, chances are you need this article.

We all have a ton of ideas and great aspirations, particularly in our youth. For some, traveling the whole world, learning new cultures, seeing what other sides of this planet look like, and tasting foods. All travelers have their unique reasons to set foot outside the country they call home.

If you are new here and don’t know who is writing this, my name is Augustin, and I am the founder of Augustine Tours, a boutique travel expert curating bespoke African journeys for the curious traveler who could be you reading me now.

Now, enough of self-promotion or introduction–if you want to hear this in a professional manner:)

Fear of adventure travel after having kids

Now back to our topic, parents who have kids, whether infants, toddlers, or teenagers, need to do due diligence when committing to overseas adventures, particularly African Safaris.

Why specifically African safaris? With now 15 years in handling African adventures, I have noticed common elements or FAQs that land in my inbox before booking a trip.

And that is the fear or anxiety. Why anxiety? Reasons may be numerous, but I will, in this article, focus on what I know.

Here is an email I received a few days ago from a family of four looking for an adventure in Rwanda and Burundi. “We’re interested, but we have a 9-month-old and a 2-year-old—is there an exception?”

The adventure was a seven-day Rwanda adventure that included a game drive in Kagera National Park and a five-day Burundi adventure that included Gishora Drum Sanctuary and Karera waterfalls.

What Makes an Adventure Suitable for Families With Kids?

In other words, what do parents need to feel comfortable on an adventure with kids? Every traveler, whether experienced or new to adventure in Africa or elsewhere, needs guidance. Guidance could be from your own past experience or the travel advisor planning your trip.

Adventure for families with kids makes no exception in seeking advice. Chances are, they need a much more well-thought-out adventure suitable for adults and kids.

Back to our itineraries.

A seven-day Rwanda adventure and five-day Burundi tour focused on history, culture, and game drives needs to answer a few key questions to relieve the parents traveling with kids.

Safety-first design( pace, terrain, medical facility access)

You may argue that everybody, both couples, solo, and those traveling with kids on adventure trips, needs this level of itinerary design. Fair! But adults and kids don’t have the same challenges. As a parent myself, I usually drive on vacation with my daughter on long distances through multiple countries; this level of planning totally makes sense.

If you are a family booked on an adventure with kids, make sure you ask the right questions without skipping any details you feel you need to be enlightened about.

Flexibility in daily schedules

From a personal experience, back-to-back safari activities leave no chance if the unexpected(like flight delays or cancellations) shows up during your safari. Asking your travel advisor to design a non-rushing itinerary positions you on the safe side.

Every itinerary has a cornerstone activity. If it is a gorilla trek, you have to make sure not to risk missing it. It is a big investment, and also gorilla permits can not be postponed. It is also hard to purchase a gorilla permit on the spot.

So, you would reserve a relaxed day preceding gorilla trekking or a wildlife game drive. Make sure you end your day early to get enough sleep for you and the kids.

Kid-friendly logistics (transport, accommodation, breaks)

Another important element is the means of transport, the level of accommodation, and breaks during your safari. I earlier spoke about relaxed or light-paced activities. Yes, this is what the parents with a 9-month-old and a 2-year-old have.

I usually say that tourism is about people and by people. If you are a travel planner, this sums up the need to understand human needs beyond business needs.

Traveling With Babies and Toddlers: Is It Really Possible?

If you are a family planning an adventure with kids, here are a few elements you need to take into account:

Parents of infants and toddlers need to speak to local experts who know the ins and outs of every destination. The local knowledge is not just a USP but a functional element that will be your guide rails if things do not go as planned.

There are, of course, in some areas limitations to things to do for parents with kids, acknowledge that and find, with the local experts, an alternative suitable to your needs.

Limitations could be age restrictions or feasibility.

Chances are, the local tour operators know what has been hard for some of the previous travelers.  You could even ask the safari operator if they have experience with families traveling with kids.

Do not assume because of what you read on the Internet. Google Maps provides distance and driving time rarely match the actual driving conditions in most countries you will travel to.

After all, the local travel expert is the one who will take you there. Why not trust your”travel companion”?

Exceptions & Adaptations: How Tours Can Be Adjusted for Young Kids

This paragraph aims to provide reassurance and solutions while being realistic. It is never easy to find a pre-packaged African safari that will suit parents traveling with kids.

Every traveler comes with unique needs and expectations, hence adventure for families with kids is usually a bespoke itinerary.

Private or semi-private tour options: This is the tour or safari that combines a good amount of time for relaxation with a particular list of day trips that draw you into a full-time adventure mood. You ask for options and choose the own doable.

Adjusted activity lengths: Again, you cannot expect to land in a country and start the tour in the next hour. The same applies to the last day of your tour or safari. It is safe to spend a day before and after the adventure to relax and prepare your outbound flight or next portion of safari, if you are on a multi-country journey.

Child carriers vs strollers: Some terrains are stroller-friendly, so make sure you have the right child carrier to allow your kid to travel with you comfortably. And for children who can walk, a reasonable distance suitable for children should be taken into account.

Flexible start times: And this one too, kids may be early birds, but that doesn’t mean they are ready to hit the road. And the fun part is, they tend to feel sleepy earlier during the day. So a nap is always expected.

Accommodation swaps if needed: Traveling with children on adventure safaris commands a clear choice of accommodation.  For the parents with a 2-year-old and a 9-month-old, the hotel will provide two cribs. What if the cribs are available, or the lodge doesn’t have the options for the kids? Be as flexible as possible to swap accommodation if needed. The most-recommended lodge may not be a fit for your needs.

What Parents Should Consider Before Booking an Adventure With Kids

What is Considered One Bag Travel Essentials For Kids

There is a long list of things to consider before booking adventures with kids, but for the sake of clarity, I will limit them to the following:

Child’s routine & nap needs: Your kids are usually adhering to a certain routine that has worked for them for a certain period of time. Remember, they are  in a new environment that they won’t easily accommodate. So expect disturbances.

Climate & altitude: This is also valid for adults, but for kids, it could be an important issue impeding your whole safari experience. Plan enough days for your safari to allow everyone in your team to settle.

Packing essentials: To avoid carrying a large amount of luggage, focus on the essentials for adults and allow enough space for kids.

Travel insurance for kids: Traveling with kids safely is the ultimate goal for every parent. This one is non-negotiable.

Parent energy levels (realistic expectations): We all come in different shapes and physical levels. Assess your personal fitness levels and plan your  adventure itinerary accordingly.

Why Well-Planned Adventures Are Better Than “Kid-Only” Trips

There are a lot of benefits for both parents and children traveling together on adventures. Knowing only one country is similar to looking at yourself through a mirror. Traveling is part of human development and education. For parents who can afford to travel with children, keep going. Your kids will thank you in their adult years.

Learning through nature and experience is not something you will get in your backyard. Life experience comes with a set of emotions, people, cultures, … and that’s what defines us a humans. Your kids need too.

Creating shared memories as a family, kids, and parents will all look at in the future when life has taken them on different paths.

Adventure for families with kids Is Still Possible

As we come to the end of this article, one takeaway is that adventure for families with kids is doable for both young parents with infants, toddlers, or even teenagers.

Finding suitable adventure for parents with children doesn’t work with a simple “check our tours and inquire,” but a structured conversation with a local travel expert or travel advisor.

You will rarely find a pre-packaged safari online, as most of them are designed for the general public with no specific interests.

Families traveling with children are not their focus.

If you are planning a trip for your family, find the right travel expert and send them your structured travel needs.
