Parents who book overseas adventures to explore the world with their children all share a desire to create meaningful shared experiences, foster curiosity, and introduce their kids to nature, culture, and real life moments through travel. This means access to those overseas family-friendly destinations require expensive international travel, long flights, and complex planning that may not work for every familyโ€™s budget. Do not get me wrong, this is not all about budget-friendly park adventures. The choice of where to go is not just defined budget constraints. According to world traveled people opinions, sometimes the best things to do are found near me and you. Just a few miles around your hometown:)

What Makes Family-Friendly National Parks in the USA a Go-to-Solution for Parents with Children

There thousand family-friendly destinations around the world where parents travel with their younger ones. Some of those who world class wildlife destinations require families to book international trips which may not be convenient or even affordable for all parents.

The United States offers an easier alternative through its national park system. From Dry Tortugas National Parkโ€™s turquoise waters and historic Fort Jefferson to Archesโ€™sandtone formations, Channel Islandsโ€™ wildlife-rich boat rides, and Badlandsโ€™ fossil-filled landscapes, families can experience diverse adventures without leaving the country.

These parks combine outdoor recreation, education and accessibility, with short hikes, guided tours snorkeling, wildlife viewing, and scenic drives suitable for kids and adults alike.

They also provide opportunities for children to leran about nature, geology, and history in an engaging, hands-on way. This makes US National parks a convenient, affordable, and enriching choice for family travel.

Unique Experiences For All Ages at Dry Tortugas National Park

Unique Experiences For All Ages at Dry Tortugas National Parkย

Sarah Gittens here,  travel writer at Salty Sarah recently did a day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park via the Yankee Freedom Ferry from Key West and is glad to contribute on this particular subject of what best families can do with kids in some of the many US national parks, a detailed things to do for people of all ages on the ferry, and indeed what a truly a fun experience for the whole family looks like.

Quick Overview of Things to Do at Dry Tortugas National Park

Dry Tortugas sits 70 miles west of Key West and is one of the most remote national parks in the U.S. The star of the show is Fort Jefferson, a massive three-story Civil War-era fort surrounded by some of the most gorgeous turquoise water. Visitors can explore the fort whether guided or self-guided, snorkel the reef along the moat wall, relax on the beaches, and watch wildlife, including migratory birds that stop here mid-journey.

Activities for Children

The 20-minute guided fort tour is a great starting point for older kids or adults who want the basic background of the fort. Of course, exploring a massive fort is the perfect hide-and-seek location, and the trail on the third story of the fort offers amazing views and is a fun and beautiful walk for all ages. With snorkeling gear included with the Yankee Freedom Ferry ticket, kids are offered more than building sand castles on the beach. The water tends to be calm, and itโ€™s gorgeous and clear, allowing visitors to spot fish, coral, and sea urchins.

Activities for Adults

Adults who want more depth can do the extended tour, which runs just over an hour and takes you through the full interior of the fort with detailed history at every turn. The top level of the fort has a walking trail with open ocean views and far fewer people. Snorkeling is solid, especially when visibility cooperates, and bird watchers and photographers will find the remote setting hard to beat. The two-and-a-half-hour ferry ride across open water, watching the fort slowly appear on the horizon, is an experience in itself.

Additional Tips

A few things that make a real difference: snorkel on whichever side of the fort the flag is blowing toward, since the structure blocks the wind and improves visibility. Book the Yankee Freedom Ferry several months in advance because it sells out fast. And pack something to do on the return ride. The day trip to Dry Tortugas National Park back after four hours in the sun, feels much longer than the way there, and it’s the one thing most people wish they had planned better.

Complete Guide of Things to Do at Arches National Park

Complete Guide of Things to Do at Arches National Park

Arches National Park offers families with children and travelers of all ages stunning landscapes filled with natural sandstone arches, scenic drives and short accessible hikes. One of the beautiful things to do are iconic hotspots spanning from Windows Trail, Park Venue, and unique panoramic that showcase the park’s red rock formations.

Emily Pennington, a lover of national parks, recommends Arches National Park as one of the BEST national parks for traveling with kids.

Things to do at Arches National Park

Some of the best things for families and multi-generational groups traveling together to Arches are the plethora of shorter hikes to impressive natural sandstone bridges. Check out the Windows Trail, a short, 1.2-mile loop with loads of huge arches, and enjoy a scenic drive to Panorama Point and Devil’s Garden.

Stop at the Moab Information Center in artsy downtown Moab to get up-to-date trail info for family-friendly hikes and let the little ones watch a short movie about the awesome geology in the area, then head into Arches, just 5 miles north of town, and take the kids to the Delicate Arch Viewpoint, a short stroll to witness Utahโ€™s most famous arch.

Park near the imposing, vermillion Courthouse Towers, and let the kiddos get their wiggles out on a short and easy hike on the Park Avenue Trail, where they can rock hop to their heartsโ€™ content. Additional Recommended Experiences at Arches National Park

Iโ€™d highly recommend heading into the park before 9 am or staying later to enjoy a fabulous desert sunset at Panorama Point with a picnic in tow, to be sure you nab the best parking and photo ops while in the park. Also, donโ€™t skip on the adorable oasis of Moab itself! This artsy desert town is full of fabulous coffee shops, great restaurants, and awesome art galleries.

The Channel Islands National Park

The Channel Islands National Park is an amazing and underrated family National Park adventure

Kayla Duford, a family travel blogger that focuses has a unique taste of many fun National Park experiences forparents with kids, but one of her more recent adventures that really stands out as a great experience for families took place at The Channel Islands National Park.

The Channel Islands National Park is an amazing and underrated family National Park adventure. The one-hour boat ride is a worthwhile adventure in itself. The captain will stop for whale sightings, and visitors can stand on the deck to watch dolphins swim and jump alongside the boat. The journey takes travelers to a remote island with stunning ocean views. Upon arriving at the beach, families can enjoy the small visitor center and take a short, family-friendly Cavern Point Loop trail. Keep an eye out for the endemic island fox on the way up to a beautiful viewpoint of the coastline. Other activities on the islands are kayaking, camping, and snorkeling!

Badlands National Park Family Recommendation

Jessica Conaway, writer and narrator with the travel app Shaka Guide has her own take on the best national parks to visit for children and adults, and indeed is glad to share her experiences with us.

I travel frequently for my job, and Iโ€™m fortunate enough to be able to take my 11-year-old daughter with me occasionally. Weโ€™ve foundโ€”quite by surprise, actuallyโ€” that Badlands National Park is one of the best family-friendly national parks of the bunch.

View from Door Trail, Badlands National Park Family Recommendation

Badlands is a relatively small park compared to others, and while it doesnโ€™t have the wide variety of hiking that some have, the hikes it does offer are pretty incredible. My daughter and I donโ€™t agree on the best one, though. Her favorite is an easy, quarter-mile boardwalk loop called the Door Trail. This one winds through the Badlands wall and encourages visitors to step off the boardwalk and walk among the rock formations. My daughter says that it makes her feel like sheโ€™s walking the same path that dinosaurs once walked.

Favorite Things To Do at Badlands National Park

My favorite hike in the park is the Fossil Exhibit Trail. This one is also an easy, 20-minute boardwalk loop, but itโ€™s also a walk through 70 million years of geological history. Along the boardwalk are replicas of fossils found in the Badlands. Occasionally, park rangers will lead interactive talks that are great for kids and parents (very helpful, especially when your kids ask you: Whatโ€™s that? And you have to come up with an answer on the spot.

One of the best parts of Badlands is that thereโ€™s a huge ecological variety of sceneryโ€”hulking, ancient rock formations on one side, and miles of wild grassland prairie on the other. So, visitors get a wide selection of wildlife. And the best place to see that wildlife is on the scenic Sage Creek Rim Road. Itโ€™s about 12 miles in total, and itโ€™s unpaved, so it can be a little tricky, depending on your vehicle. But the drive is so worth the trouble!

Youโ€™re very likely to see bison, pronghorn, big-horned sheep, and birds of prey. And at the end of the road, youโ€™ll be able to visit an entire prairie dog town!

The coolest part of Badlands is the Fossil Preparation Lab at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center. During the summer season, visitors can actually watch specialists removing fossils from specimens and ask questions in real time.

Now, besides the visitor center, there arenโ€™t many other amenities in the park, which could be trouble for kids (and grown-ups) who get hangry. Fortunately, Wall, South Dakota, is only a few minutes away from the park.

And the Wall is famous for the Wall Drug Store.

The Wall is famous for the Wall Drug Store

Wall Drug Store is one of the most iconic tourist attractions in the United States. Itโ€™s 76,000 square feet of restaurant, bakery, and souvenir shops. They famously offer free water and 5-cent coffee, free bumper stickers for first-time visitors, and fresh-baked doughnuts that are the stuff of legend. Plus, the gift shops are chock-full of the weirdest, craziest souvenirs you could imagine.

I wear my Wall Drug Bigfoot Mood Ring with pride, though.
