What Parents with Children on Wildlife Safaris Say About their Experiences

Cruise to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia

By Monika Sundem

I recently took my 10-year-old daughter on a cruise to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia in December 2025. We were on a quest to find Nemo, and amazed at how much more we saw! We boarded the Coral Discoverer in Cairns to access the reef. This is a 72-passenger small ship that I booked through our company, Adventure Life.

The company, Coral Expeditions, is known for their small, more casual feel on board. They bring on marine biologists and specialists to help enhance the learning experience onboard and ensure we can navigate to smaller reef areas for the maximized potential to snorkel and get in the water! We learned all about the marine life in the ocean, the colors of the ocean, and how to identify when a coral reef system is in distress.

We were able to snorkel seven different times, including at Sudbury Reef, Escape Reef, Mackay Reef, Ribbon Reef, and Osprey Reef. The snorkeling was incredible, and only seemed to improve as the week went on and we sailed further north along the Queensland coast. My daughter ended up starting the week very scared of sharks whenever we saw one in the water, but learned so much about their nature, what they eat, and how they act in the water with humans, that she was swimming after them by the last day.

My daughter is homeschooled, and we discovered that seeing picture-filled books and watching videos of marine life cannot compare to going and splashing in the ocean to see it for yourself. The reef became her classroom for the week, and they were both so grateful for the experience.

Taking Children on a Wildlife Trip in Yellowstone National Park

By Kayla Duford from Kandfamilyadventures.com

We took the kids to Yellowstone National Park, also known as the โ€œSerengeti of the Westโ€. We spent our days hiking around geysers and hot springs and enjoying views of bison that frequent the whole park. We also saw a variety of other animals, including bears, antelopes, and elk.

Seeing all of these wild animals gave us the opportunity to talk about giving animals a space, never approaching them, not feeding the wildlife, and other wildlife safety tips that keep them and us safe. Itโ€™s so valuable to have these opportunities with kids because itโ€™s a part of protecting our wild spaces.

It also helps make sure we donโ€™t have kids that grow up to be adults who try to ride bison in Yellowstone! But in all seriousness, itโ€™s really important to us to raise kids who care about wildlife and nature, so trips like this help them see the magic of the wild world.
