A Journey Inspired by The Likes of Into Africa: The Epic Adventures of Stanley and Livingstone
For those of you who are not familiar with the names, these are books on the two explorers covering the 1871 meeting of Henry Morton Stanley and David Livingstone, including their time in Burundi near the Mugere River and Lake Tanganyika.
Travelers Who Visited Places From Books They Read
Now let’s get back to the journeys inspired by books.
Back in 2022, I had a chat with Maxine Macdonald, an 82-year-old woman from Florida, who was inspired to consider visiting Burundi through stories she read about Livingstone and Stanley when she was a 12th-grade student.
She was on a group tour to East Africa, but she wanted an extension to Burundi as the group tour itinerary didn’t include Burundi. She did not require a solo tour per se, and she was looking to join a group tour for 5 days if possible. In case it was not possible, then she was ready to go on with a private tour with a driver/guide that my company would supply.
Why all these anecdotes? She was sent a seven-day tour itinerary taking into account history, culture, and sightseeing as these were her main travel wishes.
Visiting Real Locations From Storybooks: La Pierre de Livingstone et Stanley

How did I know her pursuit of the Livingstone and Stanley story was powerful?
Her response touched me in a different way I had never experienced.
“This is the exact type of visit that I want, as it lists almost everything that I had read about and have wanted to visit in Burundi, especially the La Pierre de Livingstone et Stanley stone monument that I read about years ago and have wanted to visit forever. I know I need a visa and hope to get one in Kigali during my visit there.
I do need an invitation letter, which I hope you will send, as I know no one in Burundi. Now, the important part: payment. How do you prefer payment? If it is secure, I can pay by credit card. Please let me know, as I believe your proposed tour is perfect for me.”
Book-Inspired Bucket List Travel Stories: The Source of the Nile and More
“I really did like the itinerary of the tour and enjoyed traveling and talking with Hippolyte the entire time. He explained the History well, and his English was easy to understand. The two places I really wanted to see, the Source of the Nile and the Rock carving of Livingstone and Stanley, were even better than I expected.”
Travel Destinations Inspired by The Wild Robot series: Visiting Channel Islands National Park in California
Kayla and her family recently visited Channel Islands National Park in California after reading the Wild Robot series (3 chapter books plus a picture book – The Wild Robot on the Island), and below is her experience.

The Wild Robot series was a wonderful book series that we recently read with our toddlers. We loved the idea of visiting an island with no people, just animals and wilderness. Channel Islands National Park near Ventura, California, made us feel like we were stepping into Roz and Brightbill’s home.
Although I don’t know which island inspired the book series, it was so easy to imagine the story taking place on this remote island with the dramatic coastlines, shoreline that Roz may have washed up on, and the beautiful mountains they hiked on. After reading the picture book that goes along with the series, “The Wild Robot on the Island“, we were really convinced that the Channel Islands could be Roz and Brightbill’s home!
Family Travel Inspired by Kids’ Books: Experiencing the Wild Robot on the Island

We took a short cruise to Santa Cruz Island (which was one of the best parts of the trip!) During the boat ride, we got to watch dolphins and whales swimming and diving alongside us. Then we spent the day hiking around and imagining where different parts of the story took place.
The islands have no restaurants or crowds, so it was the perfect way to pretend we were living in a storybook on an untouched island. Since then, we’ve read the series multiple times, and Roz makes it into conversation on a daily basis in our home. Our kids always ask when we can go back on the boat!
Visiting Places From Childhood Stories: Exploring Heidiland, Switzerland – Home of The Heidi Village

As a child, Nikki Webster not only read the Heidi book but watched the movies. For her, she had to see, touch, and feel it all for herself. She’s a sucker for children’s books, the innocence of them, and the morals taught. But Heidi (along with Annie) has always been a favorite of hers.
Visiting the Home of the Heidi Village, inspired by the book Heidi
Heidi’s story for me represents a few things. It’s the bond between her and her granddad, and how a simpler life can be what we need. The setting alone, as portrayed in the book, set the stage for an exquisite, low-key life. I remember, as a child, thinking that I would love to escape the mountains like Heidi, to be free of the system. Ironically, most of that is exactly how I have ended up – I live in a remote fishing village.
Personal Journeys Inspired by Childhood Books: What It’s Really Like to Visit Heidi Village
Now, visiting The Heidi Village was different from what I imagined. The location does have dramatic Swiss scenery. The village is adorable and almost as expected. I thoroughly enjoyed rummaging through the buildings. However, it was different from what I imagined. I thought the location would be much more remote to reach and farther from town.

And, I expected Heidi’s home to be placed way further out than the actual village. One other element which might sound odd… In the book, she sleeps on the roof of the cabin. This is replicated, but it’s not as rustic as I imagined. A little hard to explain, but it was lacking the overall feel of a little orphan girl who slept here while her granddad slept downstairs.
I know this might sound silly, but the only way I can explain this comparison is like when you visit Anne Frank’s house. Wildly different and one historical, but the feel what you read at Anne Frank’s House.
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George Inspired Sara Thibert
Growing up in New York State, one of the books I read growing up was My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. The story involves a city kid who runs away to the Catskill Mountains in New York to live off the land. Even though I lived in the suburbs and didn’t do too many outdoor adventures, for some reason, this book always stuck with me.
I loved the descriptions of nature and how the main character is innovative and resourceful. He learns to understand the behavior of the animals and wants to fight for the piece of land he calls home. As I grew up, I became an avid hiker, and the Adirondack Mountains (further north than the Catskill Mountains in New York) are what I consider my home mountains.
From the Book Story to an Experience in The Adirondack Mountains

While I’ve been to the Catskills as well, every time I step foot in the Adirondacks, I breathe a sigh of relief, and this sense of comfort comes over me. After a few trips back to the Adirondacks, I finally connected my love of this book with my current love for the mountains.
The mountains made me feel strong, capable, and humbled by the vastness around me. The mountains are so much more physically than I could have ever imagined, but they have a bigger impact emotionally on me as well. I truly love exploring them and have since expanded my travels and skills to explore New England, other areas in the United States, and done some backpacking trips internationally.
