Frequent travelers to Tanzania or those who have stayed a week or more in the country usually see unique things to do that most people donโ€™t see. It is undoubtedly a great country and a historic safari destination, making it a vast territory with numerous things to do.

While most trips in Tanzania are associated with wildebeest migration safaris, climbing Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro, the ultimate list of the best things to do in Tanzania goes beyond wildlife safaris. Combining a climb that starts with a walking tour through the giraffe and wildebeest in Arusha National Park is definitely a lifetime experience. But there is more.

Season and Best Things to Do in Tanzania Beyond Safaris

Summer, June-August in particular, is the best time to come to Tanzania; it is a classic “dry season” for safaris, where the savannah appears to be a golden color, and antelopes migrate in search of fresh pasture to graze.

For Wildebeest safari enthusiasts

This is the time when the Great Wildebeest Migration occurs, which describes the phenomenon of the wildebeest and zebra herds traveling North, crossing the crocodile-infested Mara River in Northern Serengeti, to look for greener pasture on the other side.

If you are interested in wildebeest migration, it is always recommended to stay a couple of nights in Northern Serengeti for the best experience. August is peak season here, to be honest, and you should expect a lot of travelers, but some safari operators offer unlimited game drives, hence your guide will try their best to go to a secluded area of the park.

Cultural Experiences

For travelers interested in culture, it is usually great to start a trip at West Kilimanjaro, where there is a Maasai-owned lodge offering breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, and Mount Longido, weather permitting. It is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings before the safari.

Staying at West Kilimanjaro provides a unique cultural experience within a Maasai family house. You can enjoy a variety of complimentary activities, including a visit to a Maasai boma, a village tour, nature walks with the Maasai, spear-throwing competitions, traditional Maasai songs and dances, etc.

Travel Extended Beyond Safari Adventures

Travel Extended Beyond Safari Adventures

Beyond the safaris, unique things to do in Tanzania also include exploring Zanzibar Island, with its infectious Swahili culture, which blends with the Maasai community and its traditions, offering an authentic safari experience.

Tanzanite Experience tour

Mined only in Tanzania, the beautiful blue December birthstone is known as tanzanite. The Tanzanite Experience is a 1 to 2-hour tour that introduces the history of this magnificent mineral, including how it was discovered and first mined. It is said that tanzanite is “1,000 times rarer than diamonds” and, found at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, is incredibly exclusive to Tanzania.

Exhibiting magnificent blue and violet hues, tanzanite was first discovered in 1967. World-famous New York jewellers “Tiffany & Co”, declared it “the most beautiful blue stone to be discovered in 2,000 years”, and named it Tanzanite.

Tour of the Shanga glass and weaving workshop

Shanga is the Swahili word for bead, and this tour gives artistically minded travellers the opportunity to work with beautiful glass beads while supporting an income-generating initiative for the disabled. Spend the morning or afternoon with the disabled workers at Shanga, an Elewana initiative based at Arusha Coffee Lodge.

Enjoy a tour of the workshop before getting in touch with your creative side and craft a beautiful Shanga necklace, made from recycled powder glass beads. This small business employs over 50 disabled, mute, and deaf people and produces a range of gorgeous necklaces made from beads and a selection of vibrant silk, kanga, chiffon, and voile coloured fabrics.

The workshop is a hive of creative activity, and everything from glass blowing, recycled bottles, recycling old pots and pans, paper making, beading, bead making, weaving, and metal work is done here.

Treetop canopy walk

Lose yourself among the treetops of Lake Manyara on a treetop canopy tour

Lose yourself among the treetops of Lake Manyara on a treetop canopy tour. Stroll through the ancient forests of this magnificent national park, starting on a short boardwalk that gradually rises from ground level to the forest canopy. Glide over a series of suspension bridges, flanked with thick netting for safety, and stop to marvel at viewing decks that blend into the massive tree trunks.

Enjoy an intimate glimpse of life in the treetops, eye-to-eye with monkeys, birds, and butterflies, and accompanied by your guide. Spend an hour suspended up to 18 metres (59 feet) above the forest floor.

Markets, Coastlines, and Local Flavor

DAR ES SALAAM FISH MARKET – If diving or snorkeling is not your thing but you still want to experience the incredible marine life along Tanzaniaโ€™s coastline, then a visit to the fish market offers a vivid alternative. The market is busy, colorful, loud, and packed with the dayโ€™s catch from the Indian Ocean. Walking through it gives you a close look at species you might otherwise only encounter underwater on coral reefs.

The atmosphere itself is part of the attraction, with fishermen unloading boats, traders negotiating loudly, and visitors trying to take everything in at once. For travelers interested in local culture and daily life, it provides an experience every bit as memorable as the beaches or diving excursions. It is both chaotic and fascinating in equal measure.

Pemba: Diving into the Unknown

Pemba_ Diving into the Unknown

PEMBA – This is the place to go for scuba diving, though fair warning, it is not for the fainthearted. On one dive, a couple who had just completed their PADI Advanced Diver exams bailed out entirely because the currents were so strong. Still, the payoff beneath the water was spectacular. The coral reefs and marine life felt untouched, dramatic, and wonderfully alive. The island itself also retained the atmosphere of an undiscovered country.

It is Ljubljana to Zanzibarโ€™s Prague, quieter, less commercial, and filled with a sense of mystery. A ferry traveling to Zanzibar continues onward to Pemba, and it is wise to book ahead so the dive shop can meet you on arrival. Even after all these years, the island remains one of my strongest travel memories.
