How to Plan a Wildlife Trip: Expert Tips, Destination Ideas, and Unforgettable Wildlife Encounters for an Ethical, Safe, and Rewarding Adventure that Paves the Way to Personal Moments and in the World’s Best Remote Wildlife Destinations?
From swimming alongside pink dolphins in Peru’s Amazon and witnessing humpback whales on an Antarctica cruise to unforgettable moments in Botswana’s Okavango Delta and Bremer Bay’s killer whale expeditions in Western Australia, discover how to plan wildlife encounters that truly transform your travels.
For different reasons, travel professionals describe their itineraries and travel packages as a life-changing experience. In this editorial feature, we asked a few travelers how to plan a wildlife trip experience worth calling a life-changing journey. The story goes beyond encountering wildebeest migration on an African safari, gorilla trek, whale-watching expedition, and joining a conservation project, but what that personal moment of encounter means.
How to Plan a Wildlife Trip for Families with Children
by Lucy at Love Travel Planning @lovetravelplanning
For a long time, our family had dreamed of seeing orcas in the wild. We once undertook a two-day sea kayaking trip in the San Juan Islands, USA, hoping to spot them, but sadly, the whales didnโt show up that time.
Family Wildlife Trip to Discovering Bremer Bay in Western Australia
So, when I discovered that Bremer Bay in Western Australia is one of the most reliable orca hotspots in the world, I built a whale watching trip into our family road trip from Perth down through the South West Edge.
We booked a full-day Killer Whale Expedition with Naturaliste Charters, a family-run operator with Advanced Ecotourism Accreditation behind them – they have marine biologists on board conducting live research and educating the passengers about the whales and Bremer Bay Canyon.
From Bremer Bay, itโs a 1.5-hour boat ride out to the Bremer Canyon, a deep-water ecosystem 24 nautical miles offshore, where orcas hunt between January and mid-April. We were accompanied on the way by Common dolphins riding our bow wave and an albatross signalling the orcasโ approach.
Once at the Bremer Canyon, we were rewarded by close sightings of eight different orcas, including a tall-finned male called Nibbles, plus a mother and daughter duo called Razor and Blade. We saw the orcas in stealth mode hunting for prey, and also in playful mode, swimming on their backs alongside the boat – amazing!
Life-changing Wildlife Experience For Children

With marine biologists on board, there is the opportunity for your children to take in more information than perhaps they usually would from slide shows and the opportunity to ask questions. Both our girls were thrilled to discover that the orca society is matriarchal, with Mum and Grandma ruling the pod; also to learn that each whale is identified by unique eye and saddle patch patterns and dorsal-fin scarring. The research team then followed up the trip with an email summarising all the wildlife sightings and whale behaviours from the day.
In total, we spent nearly eight hours at sea, so your children do need to have good sea legs and be interested enough in wildlife spotting to spend so much time in one place. You also need to prepare your kids for the very real chance that the wildlife might not show up on the trip (like our experience in the San Juan Islands).
For us, a successful wildlife experience means choosing properly accredited operators who put education and conservation in motion, with the safety and protection of the animals first and foremost. Wow moments, plus real learning, make memories that will last forever!!
Life Changing Wildlife Encounter in Peru: Pink Dolphins in the Amazon
by Kelly @writetravel
My husband and I traveled to Iquitos, Peru, and then took a wooden boat two hours down the Amazon River to the Maniti Eco Lodge. This was in 2016 – right before we got married and before we had our children.
What wildlife did we encounter? While we were traveling downriver, we saw pink dolphins swimming in the Amazon River.
What happened during the trip? Our boat driver pointed to the side of the boat, and swimming right beside us were pink dolphins. Watching them crest above the waterโs surface was so unexpected. I knew I would see amazing wildlife in the Amazon Rainforest, but I wasn’t prepared to see pink dolphins on the journey.
Why do we consider encountering Pink Dolphins in the Amazon a life-changing experience?

I think part of what made this life-changing was that it was completely unexpected. Perhaps due to ignorance, I had never heard of pink dolphins, so I had absolutely no preconceived notions about what they were or clung to the hope of seeing them.
To have an authentic encounter without any of the stress of โtrying to see themโ was very emotionally moving. My primary occupation is a professor/psychologist, and this experience really reminded me of Abraham Maslowโs theory about peak experiences, which are moments of profound wonder or transcendence.
I truly felt that sense of profound wonder that something so beautiful and unexpected could exist beside me. I felt really connected with nature and felt a deep desire to protect its habitat.
Booking an Antarctica Cruise and Experiencing a Humpback Whale Encounter
by Carli Rasschaert
Weeklong Cruise to Antarctica
Last year(2025), I went on a weeklong cruise to Antarctica at the end of February/beginning of March in celebration of a milestone birthday. We spent 4 days exploring different areas of Antarctica. While on the trip, we got up close and personal with penguins (mostly Gentoo, but we saw a few Chinstrap ones as well), various types of seals, and witnessed a pod of orcas near our boat as we were heading back to Argentina.
However, the most magical wildlife experience was being near all the Humpback whales. There were a few excursions where our expedition leaders would take us out on the zodiac boats to cruise around a bay, and there were a few moments when we would stop, and shortly after, a humpback would pass right next to the boat.
Memorable Trip Experience to Antarctica
But what I will never forget is the โvery curious whaleโ (as described by our head expedition leader) that came alongside the ship while we were doing a polar plunge. The whale spent over 30 minutes swimming along the ship and under the zodiac boats set up for the plunge. ย I had a balcony cabin on that side of the ship, and we had the perfect view. ย I could see every mark and barnacle perfectly as it barrel-rolled beneath us.
I live in the Pacific Northwest, so I’m lucky enough to have seen whales multiple times, but this was something truly unreal and unforgettable. Having crystal-clear water, a vantage point overhead, and a whale that was genuinely curious and seemingly playful was a combination that could never be replicated.
Needless to say, the crew had to put our polar plunge on hold while the whale was visiting. And what would have already been a once-in-a-lifetime moment of swimming in the waters of Antarctica became something even more unforgettable with our whale friend nearby.
This experience alone made every minute of crossing the Drake Passage worth it.
A Life-Changing Wildlife Encounter in the Okavango Delta
by Aaron Peterson @aaronstravels123
A life-changing wildlife trip to the Okavango Delta in Botswana

In my lifetime, I have had many wildlife encounters, from seeing marine iguanas on the Galapagos Islands to seeing penguins in Antarctica. But perhaps my most life-changing wildlife trip was to the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
A local guide took my friend and me through the delta in a mekoro, a traditional canoe, pushing through the reeds and gliding through the water. We saw herons and egrets flying overhead, and small crocodiles and large hippos in the water. Our guide had been to this area many times, so he knew exactly where we were going and how to get us there safely.
Eventually, we arrived at a small island, where we set up camp. The only manmade objects there were the things that we had brought with us.
Humbling Wildlife Experience in Botswana
This was as wild a place as one could imagine. We walked around this small island and saw lechwe, wildebeest, and zebras. It was amazing to see these animals running free – not in cages or enclosures – and with nothing to separate us from them – no fences or vehicles. As we walked, we came upon a bull elephant.
We were less than 100 feet away from him when he looked at us and started walking toward us. I was both excited and terrified as this giant moved in our direction. Our guide quickly and skillfully maneuvered us upwind of this massive creature, getting us out of its way so that it could safely pass us by. At this moment, I became acutely aware of our vulnerability and weakness. Had this animal wanted to, it could have easily hurt or killed us.
This moment was a vivid reminder that there are many things beyond our control and that we are perpetually at the mercy of Mother Nature. This life-changing experience made me a more humble man.
