How to Maximize a 24-72 Hour Trip in Edinburgh? According to Alice Wright, behind Panoramic Pathways

Touring Edinburgh Castle

I’ve spent years traveling with my husband, often adding short trips onto business travel, and we’ve developed a planning approach focused on maximizing limited time in walkable cities.

One of our best examples was an Edinburgh add-on—an evening plus two full days. Before mapping anything out, we defined our goals and constraints: iconic sights, a strong sense of place (pubs, Scotch, traditional food), and one outdoor viewpoint, all within a tight window.

A three-day itinerary or weekend trips demand intentionality

We arrived in the evening and used it intentionally—settling in with a pub crawl-style introduction and a traditional Scottish dinner (including haggis, neeps, and tatties). Day one was our “anchor day,” focused entirely on Old Town, walking the Royal Mile, and touring Edinburgh Castle. We planned each day as a tight geographic loop to avoid backtracking. Day two shifted to New Town at a slower pace, with time for a Scotch tasting. On our final morning, we hiked up to Arthur’s Seat before a late departure.

Making the most of your short trip in every smart way possible

To maximize a short trip, we remove friction wherever possible. We map airport transportation in advance, travel carry-on only to stay flexible, and stay as close to sights as possible—though occasionally moving to an airport hotel the night before departure can save time and stress.

Even with careful planning, small issues can have outsized impacts. At Edinburgh Airport, I was pulled aside at security for not having liquids properly packed, which nearly caused me to miss our flight.

If I’d change anything, it would be shifting into “travel mode” faster. On short trips, there’s no gradual unwind—you have to let go of everyday stress quickly to fully experience the destination.

Jackie Swayze on Maximizing Short 2-3 Day Weekend Trips in Newport

Many people make the mistake of thinking it’s not worth visiting a destination unless they have at least 1 or 2 weeks there. Sure, that’s ideal, but I’d much rather go see a new city for a couple of days than never go because I’m waiting for the “right time” that never comes.

72 Hour Weekend Trips Beginning With a Late-Night Flight on Friday after Work

I take a lot of weekend trips to maximize vacation days. Often, I choose destinations I can get to directly on a late-night flight on Friday after work and then take the latest flight home on Sunday to give me the most time to explore. The direct flight minimizes the chance of missed connections, and I’m more sensitive to the timings of these flights than the price – yes, the 2 PM flight is cheaper than the 9 PM one, but that requires missing work. I typically utilize social media and travel blogs to see what the top attractions are and build an itinerary from there.

Exploring Newport, Rhode Island, and Beyond on a weekend trip

One memorable weekend trip was to Newport, Rhode Island. We flew from Chicago Midway (MDW) to Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport (PVD) on Friday night, picked up a rental car, and drove to our hotel in Newport. On Saturday morning, we hit the ground running with no time to waste. We started with the iconic Cliff Walk and Easton’s Beach and stopped for Del’s Lemonade. Then we made our way to The Castle Hill Inn for a drink on their lawn and lunch inside. We finished the day with a sunset sail on the water and exploring the wharf.

What Sundays look like on weekend trips

On Sunday, we toured the massive Gilded Age mansions that Newport is known for, including The Breakers, Marble House, and The Elms. This took us most of the day, so by the time we were finished, it was time to drive to the airport and head home. Of course, in 2 days, we didn’t have time for every single thing in Newport, but we were able to hit the highlights and have a memorable stay.

I always ensure we have our work laptops with us in case of delays returning home. In the off chance your flight is cancelled, it’s good to have the option to work remotely for a day if your job allows. Thankfully, the odds of cancellations are slim – this has only happened to me once in over 50 weekend trips!

Artiom Negura on flying from Bucharest to Tbilisi for a 48-hour tour experience

Tbilisi, 48 hours, booked four days in advance. That trip is probably my clearest example of what short stays actually look like when things go sideways.

I flew in from Bucharest via a tight connection in Istanbul – 55 minutes. Everyone told me that it was crazy. They were right, almost. I made it, but my bag didn’t( This is what happens when the luggage contains more than essentials–one-bag packing vacation tips)

So day one in Georgia started with me in yesterday’s clothes, buying a cheap linen shirt from a market near Rustaveli Avenue. Honestly? That market ended up being one of the better parts of the trip.

For planning, I don’t do itineraries for short trips anymore. I pick one anchor per half-day, one neighborhood, one meal, one thing I actually want to see, and let the rest happen.

Visiting the Tbilisi Sulphur Baths & Narikala Fortress

In Tbilisi, that meant Narikala fortress in the morning, the sulfur baths area in the afternoon, and a wine bar in Tbilisi’s Old Town at night. That’s it. Anything else was a bonus. On the flight side, I’ve learned to book arrivals in the morning and departures in the evening on short trips. You lose nothing to sleep, and you’re not racing to the airport at noon.

The mistake I made in Istanbul was optimizing for price instead of buffer time. The 55-minute connection saved me maybe $40. Not worth it.

What I’d do differently: skip the layover entirely or build in at least 2 hours. And I’d book a place within walking distance of the main area I want to explore, I wasted almost 3 hours over two days just moving between neighborhoods with luggage. The bag showed up on day two, by the way. Right as I was leaving for the airport.
