San Sebastian is the Unique Food Spot in Spain, beyond its Pintxos

San Sebastian is the Unique Food Spot in Spain beyond its

Spain comes as one of the best destinations where foodies go in Europe. San Sebastian is the place to go for food if you’re in Europe. Not only is their culinary culture having a moment, but their type of food (Pintxos, small, tapas basically) allows you to try all of it.

While the world knows Spain for tapas, the Basque people have perfected the Pintxo. Imagine walking into a bar in the Parte Vieja (Old Town) where the entire counter is full of this miniature cuisine – seared foie gras with fig jam, spider crab tartlets, and the classic Gilda (a salty, spicy skewer of anchovy, olive, and guindilla pepper).

You can walk around all day ordering these little plates that look like open-faced sandwiches without getting full. And doing this is such an important part of the culture that it has a name: the Txikiteo –  the Basque tradition of bar hopping, where you have one drink and one specific pintxo at a tavern before moving to the next.

San Sebastian is recommended as a food destination in Europe by Courtney Lynn Muro, who has been to Europe dozens of times and has been to 70 countries.

Bari, Italy, at the Front Seat of Unique Food Experiences in the Puglia Region

Italy is indeed one of the best foodie destinations in Europe and the world. This makes Italy a hidden gem of a food spot, where only experts see from a unique angle. Bari is one of the best foodie cities in Europe, or connoisseurs know. The best travel food destinations in Europe are not found in the average gourmet travel guide, but in hidden spots.

What do Foodie Travelers in Europe go to Bari?

For those whoโ€™ve not been there, Bari is a port city right in front of the Adriatic Sea, and it is the capital of southern Italyโ€™s Puglia region.

One destination in Europe that truly stood out to me for its food was Bari, Italy. In just the short time I was there, it was clear that food runs through the locals’ souls. Local ladies make fresh orecchiette (a type of pasta) every morning on Strada Arco Bassa; they’ve been doing it for generations, horse meat is a delicacy, and panzerotti is the best on-the-go snack.

Spaghetti All’Assassina, a dish invented in Bari

There was one dish that I could not get enough of: Spaghetti All’Assassina, a dish invented in Bari. It’s ultimately burnt spaghetti, which sounds weird, but it’s much tastier than the name suggests.

Consisting of crispy bits of charred black spaghetti that is lightly coated in a tomato sauce seasoned with garlic and chilli. The absolute best way to have it is with a dollop of stracciatella. The combination of hot, crunchy spaghetti with a cold, creamy cheese is so good.

I had it almost every night. I found the best restaurant to be La Baresana. A real highlight to the great meal was walking inside to pay and interrupting the kitchen staff and what appeared to be the manager having a full-blown argument. About what, I was unsure, but it felt very Italian and fuelled with passion.

Why is Bari a hidden foodie spot in Italy

Why is Bari a hidden foodie spot in Italy? What dishes do travelers try that locals swear by, and what is it like? Horse meat is a delicacy in Bari; however, where I am from, Ireland, no one eats it; it’s actually taboo. I tried braciole, which is thin slices of horse meat stuffed with garlic, parsley, and cheese. It was delicious, so rich and tender, the pieces just melted in my mouth.

Greece is Home to One of the Best Cities for Foodies in Europe

Sifnos, Greece, is one of those hidden food gems in Europe

The entire island is a foodie paradise. There is a strong history of ceramics and pottery on the island since it is rich in clay, and there are several tavernas serving slow-cooked lamb and chickpeas, using clay pots. These tavernas are located on the beaches of little coves with thriving local communities. You can go to ceramic shops and see their produce in the restaurants and have delicious meals in a truly authentic Greek Island style. Sifnos is nowhere near as busy as other, easier to get to islands like Mykonos and Santorini … a true local experience.

Fiumefreddo Bruzio makes Italy one of the best food destinations in Europe.

Why do passionate foodies call Fiumefreddo a city for an authentic food experience in Europe, Zaeem Jafri explains.

We stayed here as part of our road trip in Calabria, southern Italy, a beautiful hilltop town, and our Airbnb host invited us for a meal at her house. She made a traditional Italian Christmas Eve dinner, which she prepared all together. Fried anchovies she got fresh that morning, and a pasta dish. It was lovely, the Airbnb is also stocked with produce from her allotment, including her own olive oil, tropea onions, and garlic, so we also cooked our meals in this tiny rustic Airbnb using all of her stuff, and brought home some of her olive oil.
