Discover real traveler stories, expert tips, and honest advice on what it’s like to travel to Africa in summer—covering weather, wildlife, costs, and the best destinations to visit.
As a content creator and travel professional, I have a collection of numerous exciting moments about what it feels like to plan a trip to Africa.
Most people who have not been to Africa come across numerous average travel guides taking them through emotional preparedness rather than trip planning itself. This stops travelers from making the most of short or long stays in destinations they choose to visit. This piece includes voices from frequent travelers who have successfully planned and executed short but meaningful trips in Africa. It also features travelers heading to Africa this summer and, most importantly, what they are most excited about.
If you are thinking of traveling to Africa and possibly squeezing the essence of a destination into just three days or more, this firsthand travel voices article is for you.
We will explore key concerns that frequent travelers or casual visitors encounter when they plan to travel to Africa, and this includes:
- How to plan an itinerary to maximize your limited time
- How to book flights (arrival/departure timing, airport choice, layovers, etc.) to optimize your multi-country safari experience while staying realistic and safe with scheduling
- What you need to be aware of to avoid travel mishaps, such as delays, cancellations, and missed connections.
What is it like planning to travel to Africa when you’ve been there before
Some travelers planning a trip to Africa are super excited about visiting places they have known long before. The approach is different, as most of them know what awaits them during their trip.
For those, their inquiries will read like this one:
I would like to start my trip in Bujumbura and finish in Kigali. I am so interested in Burundi and Congo DR. I once did a gorilla trek in Rwanda at Volcanoes National Park… This time, if possible, I would like to do a gorilla Trekking in Uganda (Bwindi NP) or in the Democratic Republic of Congo DR (if the situation is good).
Traveling to Africa on a multi-country Itinerary

And others are indeed thrilled, but the fact that they are on a multi-country African itinerary creates a mix of excitement and logistical challenges. This type of scenario could be noticed through this trip inquiry:
I’m not certain how I feel about traveling to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda alone as a solo woman— on one hand, it sounds peaceful and great, but I am hesitant about traveling on a 14-day itinerary alone. So let me ask a couple of questions. If I have one other person, how much would the cost be?
How about 2 other people? I’ll see if my nephews want to join me on this African trip.
Also, if I do it alone, I could make the trip shorter, but I couldn’t find anything I wanted to cut out. I’m most interested in elephants, so it looks like there is a part of the trip where it may be possible to see them.
How much in advance do I need to book this trip? I’m planning my round-the-world trip now, and it’s really hard (but fun) getting everything organized for six months of travel, so I just need to know as many deadlines as possible.
Lastly, is there anything else you’d recommend while I’m in the area? I am thinking of a trip to Mauritius and Seychelles after Uganda.
How Adventurous solo travelers plan a trip to Africa

There are numerous guides about traveling to Africa, things to do in certain destinations, which most first-time overseas trip takers need.
The confidence around taking overseas trips to Africa or anywhere around the world is built through small pieces of journeys you take here and there.
How experienced solo travelers plan trips can be summed up in this safari inquiry about East Africa:
I’m an experienced, confident, and adventurous solo traveler. I’d like to visit local villages and immerse myself in the local culture, spend a day doing tracking/conservation work, and I enjoy physical and exhilarating experiences. I’d love to see the Big 5 while on safari! I’ve been intrigued by horseback riding safaris, though I am a novice rider. I like a nice, firm bed and protection from bugs most nights (a few nights of rustic camping okay!), and otherwise don’t need much in terms of amenities.
Ideally, I would arrive in Africa (Nairobi?) on a day before, take a day to recover from travel in the city, and then set out for a safari adventure. My current idea is to do a safari in Kenya for around 6 days and then go to Tanzania to go scuba diving on Mafia Island (I can plan this part!), including a 1-day visit each to Mount Kilimanjaro and Ngorongoro Crater, returning to the US on August 19th.
What is Anyone Heading to Africa This Summer Excited About?

Jenita Lawal plans to travel to Africa for this fall (September to November) and plans to visit four or five African countries: Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and possibly Tanzania.
What is it like planning a trip to Africa on a private tour or joining a small group tour? She plans to do a mix of independent and group travel. For the Kenya portion, she’ll be traveling with a group for the Association of Black Travel Advisors.
Her most beautiful reasons to visit these five African destinations: In her 20s, Jenita attended a concert at a church that featured a Ugandan band. It was the first time she really had fun and felt free in church. They, plus the Masaka Kids, are my reasons for wanting to experience Uganda. The only African country she has visited so far is South Africa. Jenita feels like the next opportunity is in Africa. Rwanda, Kenya, and Ethiopia are great African travel destinations for both business (tech & finance) and leisure travel.
Her excitement about traveling to East Africa: She is very excited to experience more of Africa. It’s great to see that the countries are making it easier to enter, individually and regionally, particularly through the East African visa.

Travel Writers Traveling to Uganda this Summer

Jen Kaarlo, a freelance journalist focusing on Luxury Female Solo Travel and Modern Love, who has so far traveled to 52 countries, and counting, is traveling to Uganda this summer.
What is it like to travel to Africa on a press trip? Jen is joining a group tour of Travel Writers going to Africa, and more precisely, traveling to Uganda.
One of the things she is most excited about is traveling to Africa on a press trip to Uganda in the coming weeks on behalf of the Ugandan Trade Commission.
Jen and her other journalists will be traveling with a small group of journalists around the country and then finishing the trip with the Pearl of Africa Expo at the Commonwealth Speke Resort.
Excited about traveling to Uganda: Gorilla trekking, being one of the main things to do in Uganda, she’s beyond excited for the trip and cannot wait to see so many gorgeous animals in the wild.
Jen will be posting about her trip on Instagram @jenkaarlo.
Visiting Casablanca then Marrakech: Traveling to Morocco from Connecticut

Leslie Polizzotto is traveling to Africa in May with a small group of 6 women from Connecticut.
What is it like planning a trip from Connecticut to Morocco? Leslie’s friend’s husband is from Marrakech, and she travels there a lot. She fell in love with the culture and wanted to share the life-changing travel experience with other women. She has created a highly curated retreat for a small group of women. The 6 women traveling to Morocco will be staying in a private house with a chef. Things to do in Casablanca and Marrakech are numerous. Activities include: a Hamam visit, Cooking Class, Souk visits, Desert Day trip, meditation, and other holistic therapies.
Thrill about traveling to Morocco: There is always an excitement about visiting a place, and she has hers.
She is thrilled to have the opportunity to visit Africa. Especially a country so rich in history and adored by Western Culture. Leslie would have never attempted such a trip on my own. Since she is traveling with a friend, and it is all curated, she does not have to wonder where to stay, what to do, or see. She knows this trip will be life-changing.
