First Things First: What Does It Take to Win Your First Booking
If you run a transportation services company or even a luxury travel brand, there is always a difficult question. How do you get the first traveler to book your travel services? Most travel entrepreneurs struggle not only to grow a business but, most importantly, to secure the first travel bookings.
In this article, I have gathered practical, firsthand experiences in securing the first booking. This is not about guessing tips, but actual tips from people who run a travel business in every niche you could imagine, from hotels, cruises, and luxury.
If you ask different travel entrepreneurs, some will say, ” Oh yeah, we started securing our first bookings by advertising on social media and with Google ads,โ and others will say, referrals.
If you ask somebody who started a business in the 1900s, or to put it clearly, before the Internet age, chances are, word of mouth was a better marketing tool.
Regardless of the age we are in, the best advice to a new entrepreneur has always been to start slow, build trust, and deliver on what your brand promise.
There’s no better marketing than word of mouth by satisfied customers.
Starting a travel business, of course, required operation permits and licenses, and that is the main hurdle, even if in some cases, you have to wait a longer period, depending on the city management’s speed.
And the second part of the article discusses how to maintain a business once you’ve seen paying customers knocking on your door.
What you will learn:
1. How did other companies manage to secure the first bookings
2. Tips for entrepreneurs starting a niche travel business in this new digital era flooded with AI content and narratives?
3. And finally, this is not about self-promotion but a feature that somebody planning a business will read and see you as an inspiration. We donโt have to be Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, etc, to inspire other entrepreneurs.
How to Get Your First Travel Bookings: Hurdles and Strategies

Globalduniya is a travel agency and tour operator corporation based in Vancouver, BC, Canada, co-founded by the brothers Anadi Mishra and Anant Mishra, because they got tired of how impersonal the travel industry felt.
They mostly deal in international flights, Europe, Japan, and Mexico vacation package planning, local private tours in BC, and are also a Canada-focused DMC.
How did Globalduniya manage to secure the first bookings?
Here’s what we actually did: we talked to people, lots of people. We had to figure out what exactly the pain points of travelers like us were, what emotions they felt when talking to a consultant. If they had a good experience with any consultant, what do they remember most?.
So, the first thing was to survey and figure out if what you want to provide fits with what people are looking for.
Then, slowly, repeatedly, we focused on helping people, and we got referrals from friends, the community, and people who knew us.
The most important thing was availability. For the first few years, we have to put all effort into being available to the customers; you can’t have your comfort until you reach a point when you have systemized processes and people.
So, for the first few bookings, focus only on fit and availability.
When did you start your business, and what were the hurdles at that time?

It was rough, but that’s what running a business is like: you are building/repairing a ship as you are moving through water.
The biggest problem was that nobody knew us, and nobody trusted us. We tried everything from ads to manual outreach, but it wasn’t working. People didn’t trust us as authority yet, and we had to slowly build faith from the community that we knew what we were doing. But, in time, we started figuring out what our competitors were clearly lacking and how we excelled instead, so we doubled down on those things. It was a risky six months, but we solely focused on being known as Experts in Mexico Packages at that time, and unending availability.
I remember in 2018, we were regularly receiving phone calls from a group of 15 people, family we did, at 3:00 a.m., and we had to help them deal with airport baggage issues, to allergies in food that were previously reported to the resort. But that’s what you do when you are passionate about something, and that group became my lifetime clients, and they even added me to their family group chat!
Tips for entrepreneurs starting a business in vacation packages in this new digital era, flooded with AI content and narratives?

Do not treat AI as a solution, but rather as a tool to engineer better service. Your knowledge, skill, and uniqueness cannot really be copied because AI can only regurgitate something everyone says, but not your personal opinion.
Use them as tools to increase your productivity, but when it comes to meeting with customers, just be real.
Share your personal anecdotes, what other travelers think, what patterns you have noticed, and what things you think they would or wouldn’t enjoy. What mistakes have you and others made?
Have an opinion, that’s what they are coming to you for after all. Be specific too, don’t always be vague, people are good at noticing that.
And remember why you wanted to come into this field in the first place: it is because you enjoyed sharing the love of travel with others. So, travel as much as you can, and also help others travel a lot too; there is beauty hidden everywhere you see. Sometimes, you just need to point a finger.
How to Craft the Best Travel terms and conditions To Keep a Business Alive and How to Enforce Them Wisely

Molly Young, founder of QuietRoutes, a China-based private tour company, has been working in the China travel industry for nearly 20 years, and his insights on travel terms and bookings can inspire one to keep their business alive after securing the first bookings.
Why are Longer Booking Windows needed for Some Trips?
One major reason is that international travelers increasingly prioritize meaningful, immersive experiences over traditional โchecklist tourism.โ These experiences often have very limited capacity because of environmental protection policies, local community agreements, or operational realities.
For example, one of our niche experiences near Jiuzhaigou involves visiting a remote Tibetan valley and joining a local Tibetan family experience. The program only operates from April to October, and visitor numbers are capped daily to protect the local environment and maintain authenticity. Once the quota is reached, we stop accepting bookings. For this type of trip, we usually recommend booking at least three months in advance.
Another factor is that high-quality guides are still very limited in many destinations and experience types, especially trekking and adventure travel. For the Sawu Sacred Mountain trek in Western Sichuan, experienced expedition leaders and local mountain guides are extremely limited. The best guides are often fully booked several months ahead during the short trekking season. Sometimes guests even offer to pay extra for a specific guide, but still cannot secure availability because the guide is already fully booked.
Why stricter Cancellation and Travel Terms?
Since 2025, China’s inbound travel has been growing rapidly. Based on our company data, more than 70% of our bookings are now personalized private tours. Customized itineraries require much more planning time and dedicated resources compared with standard group tours. They are both time- and energy-intensive to organize. As an operator, we want the trip to be confirmed as early as possible so we can start arranging the following things.
How to Manage Risk and Flexibility Around Best Terms to Keep The Business Alive?
We usually recommend that our guests clearly understand the cancellation schedule before making payment and purchase comprehensive travel insurance immediately after booking, especially for customized or remote-destination trips.
In our experience, travelers are no longer only paying for destinations. They are paying for access to limited experiences. That naturally makes advanced planning more important, but it also increases the need for clear communication and realistic cancellation expectations between travelers and operators.
