Fun facts about food, traditions, and heritage are what define destinations and the people we interact with when exploring places we’ve been dreaming of. Surprisingly, we love countries more or less based on a combination of elements ranging from culture, traditions, history, lifestyle, and places we choose to love or hate, depending on where your love weighing balance tends to lean.

Fun Facts About Food Around the World That Shape Destinations

Foods have a power over how we interact with people. It’s not just about the stomach but more about ways of life. Why does associating our travel experiences with the foods we try near places or far go BEYOND foodie niche?

  • If you’ve ever tried the strangest foods and find yourself recommending them in your foodie travel guides, chances are you won’t forget destinations and their people.
  • Fun facts about international cuisine are only fun and meaningful as such if you convey the context in which you define those food experiences, and that shapes the destination narrative.
  • If you’ve come across an article title listing weird food traditions in different countries you plan to travel to, remember that the author is usually referring to their point of view versus the destination people, which creates curiosity about places we visit.
  • A post discussing interesting food facts from different cultures in a particular country will likely take you through its geography, history, and agrotourism specialities.

In a few words, the tourism industry is so expandable that one niche can impact the boom of another travel niche. How do fun facts about food shape destinations?

Fun Facts About Food in South Korea: Restaurant Call Buttons

by Lynette McMichael @wanderskorea on Instagram

One of the most interesting everyday aspects of how restaurants operate in South Korea is the call button and the utensil drawer at each table.

Instead of waitstaff repeatedly stopping by to ask how everything is, diners press the button whenever they need something.

I really wasn’t sure what it was for at first, but soon realized that’s how you get the staff’s attention. I kept hearing a doorbell go off. The staff would come out, approach a table, and then bring them something.

It definitely feels odd pushing a doorbell essentially to get the waitstaff’s attention. Now I prefer it to how the US does it, hoping your waiter will walk by without ignoring you while you interrupt whatever they are doing.

I also love that the utensils are in a drawer or in a box at the table. So if you drop your chopsticks, you don’t need to wait and get the waitstaff’s attention for a fresh set.

It’s a small detail most tourists probably don’t expect, may overlook, or don’t know how to use at first. But it makes perfect sense once you experience it. Even now, whenever I am eating out and need to flag someone down for something, I think about how practical that Korean system is and wish the restaurants in the US would adopt these features.

Fun Facts About Food in El Salvador & Quesadilla

Fun Facts About Food in El Salvador & Quesadilla

by Kelly @writetravel on Instagram

In El Salvador, a quesadilla isn’t what most American visitors would expect. Instead of a tortilla filled with melted cheese, a quesadilla in El Salvador is a dense, sweet cake often served with coffee. It’s completely different than what I would have thought!
Similarly, a tortilla in Spain isn’t a round flatbread. Instead, it’s a thick omelet made with potatoes, onions, and eggs. These foods have stuck with me because they are so different from what I expected.

Fun Facts About Food, Festivals, and Languages (Bonus)

Interesting Fun Facts by Julie from Travel and Tinsel @travelandtinsel on Instagram.

I have a few interesting facts and experiences about visiting foreign countries that might be useful! Spain’s Fun fact about Festivals: A lesser-known event I attended is Las Fallas in Valencia, Spain. They build intricate and colorful stationary floats (called ninots) that are displayed all across the city.  At the end of the festival, they burn them. Its origin is an old carpenter’s celebration of spring.  It originally began by just burning pieces of wood until the Valencian sense of humor turned them more human and character-like.

Fun Facts About Food in Japan: A food specialty I tried in Japan was grasshoppers in soy sauce, called Inago no tsukudani.

Another cultural tradition I experienced in Spain is eating 12 grapes for each chime at midnight on New Year’s Eve.  Each grape represents good luck for one month of the year.

Language Twist- Fun Facts about the Czech Language: You don’t have to know the language to still connect with locals. I don’t speak Czech, but I had the most lovely encounter with a tea shop owner in Prague.  We connected over our shared love of tea without having to speak the same language.

Fun Facts About Money in England: In some countries, interesting facts are not just about food, culture, and history. How about interesting facts about money faux pas? England changes its currency when the monarch changes.  I learned the hard way.  I visited London 20 years apart and tried to use money from a previous trip at a Christmas market vendor’s stall.  She looked at me and said, “Where did you get that?”  Luckily, we just laughed about it, and I was able to exchange it!

Fun facts about Train in Tokyo

Fun facts about Train in Tokyo( Extra Bonus).

By Angela Hernandez

I visited Tokyo some years ago and found that one small aspect of a lot of people’s everyday life gave me a perspective on the efficiency with which they live.

As a tourist adventure, we decided to take the train to the outskirts of the city to visit some temples and bamboo forests. To get the most out of our day, we decided to go during the morning rush hour. I had heard about the train rides before visiting, but experiencing it in person was something else entirely.

There was order on the platform; it’s not like the NYC subway. People lined up in marked queues directly in front of where the train doors would open. It all looked calm and organized until the train arrived. Somehow, the organization turned into a mass packing of the train. There was absolutely no personal space.

I can honestly say that I got on that train without my feet touching the floor – that’s how much pushing was going on. It was shocking to me, but I could see that there was a shared understanding of how this works. I loved the experience. It showed me that even their chaos is somewhat organized. This type of situation would likely cause fights in the US. But in Tokyo, it was just another part of their daily lives.

I now run an AI accounting agency where I help businesses automate anything they can think of. This allows me to travel the world. I have more stories from my visit to Tokyo, and a bunch of my travels in general. Below is a list of the countries I’ve visited. Let me know if I can ever be of any help.
