Best Travel Essentials To Never Leave Home Without, According to Frequent Travelers.

Wondering what one thing other people never travel without, and why is it essential to their travel experience? These answers range from practical, emotional, or even unexpected trip accessories (physical item, app, habit, or personal travel ritual). The goal is to highlight real-world travel essentials from different travel styles and perspectives.

A Small Hardcover Notebook, One Travel Essential To Never Leave Without

By Caleb John, a regular traveler who spends much of the year traveling from job sites to supplier meetings and industry events around the country.

For a trade business, travel is a part of the job, and over the years I’ve become very systematic about what makes travel work well. Let me tell you the one thing I never leave without.

A small hardcover notebook is the one item I never travel without, and I say that as someone who runs a business entirely off a phone and laptop. Writing something down by hand is the only way I’ve found to actually work through a decision rather than just record it.

I use it for long-haul flights for pricing and job planning purposes, where the noise in the office doesn’t allow me to sit with it properly. It costs under $10, has no battery, and has no notifications. It began on a flight when my phone died, and I have continued with it ever since.

Never Traveled Without My Compression Socks, One Non-Negotiable Travel Packing List Item

Never Traveled Without My Compression Socks, One Non-Negotiable Travel Packing List Item

by Lena Anderson, Founder & Travel Advisor, Sweet Bean Travels

Although they are my least glamorous essential item, I’m never traveling without my compression socks! As a travel advisor who regularly logs long-haul, multi-stop international trips, I’ve learned the hard way that long flights wreak havoc on circulation, and showing up puffy and fatigued is a fast way to lose my first day.

I not only wear them on the plane, but I’ll also wear them to bed the first night or two in-country. Compression socks are my quiet non-negotiable. They are practical, proven, and completely unsexy in the best way. My clients laugh when I bring them up, but they always thank me later.

Clear Packing Cubes, Must-Have Trip Essentials

By Bernadine Cruz, Traveler, Founder, CONMIGO

Because I love to travel, I started a travel bag company when most of my colleagues were hanging up their stethoscopes.  Being well aware that journeys can teeter on the knife-edge of chaos or wonder, I have been hyper-focused on alleviating the craziness by being organized. No more ‘playing the game’ of where did I put it. Clear packing cubes…everything in its place and a place for everything. Compression bags that store pants, blouses, dresses, etc., so no need to riffle through everything.  Luggage that has customizable dividers is not a luxury but a given.

My Ettellon Luxe Ensemble, Luxury Travel Toiletry Kit For Women, One Thing To Never Travel Without

By Nicole Nollette @ettellon, a frequent flyer with over 3 decades of experience on the road for work and for pleasure.

One thing I never travel without: my Ettellon Luxe Ensemble

Why? After 2 decades of travel and immense frustration with the lack of functional and beautiful cosmetic bag options, I designed my own.  I then spent the next decade stress testing my product and refining the design – until March, when I quit my corporate job to officially launch Ettellon and introduce my product to the world.

The Luxe Ensemble is versatile, durable, and looks great. If there is an inevitable liquid spill, the interior pouches wipe clean, and the Aquaguard zipper contains the spill. The removable interior pouches can multitask as a crossbody or just be removed to make them accessible on the hotel room nightstand, bathroom counter, or office desk.  It’s a great bag and solves the problem of having many mismatched toiletry bags thrown together in a suitcase.

Phone and Travel Apps, Smart Packing List for Vacation

Phone and Travel Apps, Smart Packing List for Vacation

By Will Steel here, former RAF pilot, founder of the Fittra Leadership Institute in Dubai, author of Free to Lead, and Business Performance and Leadership Coach.

The one thing I never travel without is my phone — specifically, two apps I use to capture ideas, thoughts, and tasks I need to get done: Notes and AudioMemos. After 15 years of flying and delivering programs across 26 countries in 18 languages, I learned that the insights that change your life rarely arrive at your desk.

They pop up at 35,000 feet on a Red-eye flight over Greenland or on a train from Casablanca to Tangiers (where, by the way, I wrote the Introduction to my book, Free To Lead), and if you don’t capture them within 60 seconds, they’re gone. I sketched the entire structure of the Fittra Method on a napkin somewhere over the Atlantic and copied it into Notes before I landed, as well as countless song ideas captured on early morning flights where any ordinary non-creative individual would be trying to catch up on sleep.

And there are many a time I’ve woken up at 4 or 5 in the morning and grabbed my phone and hit record to capture the answer to a problem I’m currently dealing with, because if I don’t, I know I won’t remember it when I do get up later.  Phones are mainly used for consuming other people’s thoughts, but by using these apps, my thoughts get captured and not lost.

I Never Travel Without My Plastic Purple Cup, Spill-proof Travel Suction Mug

By Norm Bour, author of “Nomadic Life for All Ages”

As to what we ALWAYS carry, it’s a simple cup. A plastic purple cup (actually 2 of them) that I bought in Turkiye 4 years ago, and they go where I go. It is microwave safe and insulated, so I use it to carry yogurt, nuts, fruit, make coffee/ tea, and a host of other things I might need to prepare.

I Never Travel Without My Plastic Purple Cup, Spill-proof Travel Suction Mug

I’ve been a full-time nomad since 2019, and I have tried to find an exact version of this, but I have never seen one again. I even returned to the chain (Rossman’s) I bought it from last fall when I went back to Antalya, and they didn’t have any. There are other simple doodads we carry, like clips, double-sided tape, and suction cup hooks (including one for holding errant and misguided shower heads), but I think the cup is novel.

One Thing I never Travel Without, A zDen, My Portable Personal Sleep Sanctuary.

By Danielle Fujii @zdensleep, creator and CEO of zDen

Why it is essential: Travel is exciting, but poor sleep can affect how much you actually enjoy the trip, especially with more people staying in vacation rentals, Airbnb homes, and shared spaces that may not have hotel-style blackout curtains. Many rooms have bright hallway light, charging lights, digital clocks, TVs, outdoor lighting, or window coverings that do not fully block light.

For me, creating a personal dark sleep space helps make an unfamiliar room feel more restful and gives my body a better chance to get quality sleep. It is also helpful when traveling with children because it gives families an easy way to support nap schedules in a darker, more distraction-free space. zDen was designed to help people create a private dark sleep space anytime, anywhere, which makes it a travel essential.

Two Travel Essentials She Never Travels Without: Travel Journal & Travel Gongfu-style Tea Set

Patricia Vidal, found @spanishnomad on Instagram and Threads, a travel content creator, shares two travel essentials she never travels without.

I never travel without a travel journal. My memories are my treasure, and some of them unfortunately fade if not recorded. As a content creator who writes articles about the places I visit, those notes are very useful once I start writing about a particular destination.

On a more personal level, journaling during my travels helps me process everything I am experiencing in a new location. I am a curious traveler, and I often pack my days with different types of activities, so it can feel overwhelming if I don’t pause to take it all in. I often take my journal out of my bag while sitting in a cafe and jot down my feelings and experiences from the day.

One more thing I have recently incorporated in my travels is a travel gongfu-style tea set. I have always been a tea drinker, but more recently, I have integrated the Chinese tea-brewing ritual into my lifestyle. When I travel, a tea bag and a thermos are not enough for me, because they can’t recreate the experience of preparing tea slowly and intentionally. This small practice is a way of creating a space for myself; it allows me to slow down and feel grounded between days filled with sightseeing and activity.

One Thing On My Vacation Packing Checklist: Backup Paper Copies of Travel Reservations

One Thing On My Vacation Packing Checklist_ Backup Paper Copies of Travel Reservations

Michael Vater, a Traveling Lawyer, never travels without backup paper copies of reservations.

I always bring backup paper copies of reservations whenever I travel in a small three-ring binder. I frequently travel internationally, and having paper copies of international reservations has proven to be essential when checking in for a flight. Many airlines require proof of a return flight or departure from the destination that you are traveling to when traveling on an international flight.

There are numerous times I have been at the airport and needed to pull out a reservation. Also, there are many times when going through customs, where cell phone use is prohibited; thus, I have had to pull out a reservation to show that I have a hotel reservation while staying in the country, as the border patrol requires knowing where the traveler is staying.

Furthermore, in countries where Wifi may be spotty, having the reservation information in paper form has been quite useful for traveling to the destination when in the location, and it may not be feasible to log into the email reservation on my phone due to the wifi or connectivity issues. Having the binder keeps all the documents in order, so that when I may need them on the journey, it also ensures that the documents are kept nice and neat for passing off to whoever needs the travel reservation.

Not Just a Neck Pillow, But a Travel Pillowcase, One Unique Travel Accessory to Never Travel Without

By Cheryl Strauss Einhorn @cherylseinhorn, founder of Decisive, a decision science consulting and coaching firm.

One thing I never travel without: My pillowcase. Every hotel bed is different; the scratchiness of the pillowcases and the smell are two things you can control. And those small details matter for a good night’s sleep when you travel, helping bring a little familiarity and comfort of home no matter where you find yourself.

Must-Have Travel Essentials: Multi-Plug Adapter(Universal Travel Adapter) & Noise-Cancelling Headphones as Road Trip Necessities

By Walter G. Meyer @waltergmeyer on X(formerly Twitter) and @waltswanderingson YouTube.

I have been a nomad since the COVID lockdown ended, traveling to the remaining few US states I had not been to before, and hitting a few more of our National Parks, bringing my total to 43 of the 63 parks, and I spent most of 2023 hopping around Europe. I am writing this from Lima, Peru, after a visit to Bogota.

I have a few must-haves for my travels.

–  A few supplements I take that are difficult or impossible to find in other countries and in small towns in Wyoming or Alaska.

–  My multi-plug adapter. Not only does it allow me to use any outlet, anywhere, but in addition, it has two USB ports so I, and whoever I am traveling with, can charge our phones overnight.

–  My noise-cancelling headphones( For road trip essentials, too). I usually use the white noise on my phone to drown out the many sounds of the city to which I am unaccustomed. But if the city is really loud, as the first place I stayed in Lima was, I put on my headphones to put the white noise directly into my ears, drowning out all else.

Travel Toiletry Bag Essentials To Never Leave Home: Sunscreen, Moisturizer, and Cacay oil.

Travel Toiletry Bag Essentials To Never Leave Home_ Sunscreen, Moisturizer, and Cacay oil

By Captain Kelly Gordon @captain_kellyjgordon on all social media, Superyacht Captain and Founder of Yachtie Minds Matter.

I never travel without sunscreen, moisturizer, and Cacay oil. I don’t care where I am going, the season I am going in, or how much of my body will be covered with clothing – I am ALWAYS wearing reef-safe sunscreen. And when you’re out on the water, in the salt air, and in the sun all day every day, your skin takes a beating. They aren’t paying me to say this!  I am just a big fan because they are the best!

Another thing I never travel without: my sidekick, Captain Clark. She is a rescue dog and a support animal, and she travels the world with me. She is essential because no matter where I am in the world, she is home to me.

Two Travel Essentials: A Book Light and a Small Stroller Fan

By Lori, a travel writer and travel advisor, @southernersays on IG, FB, X and Bluesky,  shares essentials she never travels without.

Two things I never travel without: a book light and a small “stroller” fan.  The book light is useful for reading, obviously, but also helpful when a hotel room or space doesn’t have any low lighting. Also comes in handy if the electricity goes out. The fan helps me stay cool, but it also serves as a bit of white noise in noisy situations or gives some background noise when it’s too quiet. Works both ways 🙂 The fan is small, rechargeable, and has bendy plastic legs so you can put it anywhere – even a stroller.

Kindle, Carry-on Bag Travel Essentials For Solo Travelers

Kindle, Carry-on Bag Travel Essentials For Solo Travelers

Carli Rasschaert @adventureswithcarli on Instagram, travel blogger + content creator, shares one thing she never travels without.

As a frequent solo traveler, getting a Kindle has improved the way I travel in so many ways. It gives me something to do other than constantly scrolling during downtime, like eating or standing in a customs line for 30 minutes. It has also helped me slow down while I travel. Rather than be constantly on the move, I might spend the morning visiting local sites and museums, and then have some downtime in the afternoon to read by a park, at a beach, or at a pool, to reset before heading off to dinner.

Having a Kindle has really helped take away some of the awkwardness of dining alone when you’re getting started with solo travel.  And as a bonus, it’s small and light, so there’s no worry about filling your bag with heavy books.

Journey System, The Perfect Carry-on-sized Backpack

By Tys, founder of Idea Mountain

Because I believe this so fundamentally, I built a small brand business around the idea – the thing that is foundational to good, organized, adventurous travel is the right travel backpack. A backpack system that combines all the bags one needs on any sort of trip into one, a perfect carry-on-sized backpack we call the Journey System. By having the Journey with me, I have a spot for everything and the right thing to carry it in – so the bag actually helps people pack and travel.  You should only carry what you need, and nothing else, and taking the Journey means you are ready for an adventure.

Botanical Gummies and Brown Noise Sound Machine, Sleep Travel Essentials

By Mark Gillilan,  business traveler and founder @ Kyoto Botanicals

For me, the most important travel product is one to help me sleep in new places. I have always struggled with this, especially on the first night, as do many people, and it is essential when sleeping in hotel rooms.

Between these botanical gummies and my brown noise sound machine, I find I can relax and rest so much better in a new environment. As a solopreneur, I travel often for business, and these 2 items are easy to bring with me (gummies go through security without issue, and brown noise is just an app on my phone) and help me keep my sleep routine consistent so I can be at my best for partner meetings on the road.

Final Thoughts: Why So Many Must-Have International Trip Essentials: Travel Toiletry Kit, High-wattage Power Adapter, Easily Packable Tote, Reusable Water Bottle

Why So Many Must-Have International Trip Essentials_ Travel Toiletry Kit, High-wattage Power Adapter, Easily Packable Tote, Reusable Water Bottle

Goedele Mangelaars, founder and CEO of trip-planning platform Pink Notebook.

Travel frequency: “I have moved almost every three years since I was born, so I was lucky to be exposed to airports and travel from a very young age. Nowadays, especially with my job, I take roughly seven transatlantic return trips per year, as well as one longer Asia trip to see my team, and then many shorter flights across Europe to visit family. I have lost track of the number of countries I have been to, but I expect it to be somewhere around 20.”

Personal preferences: “I never board a plane without my Dettol or Clorox wipes. They’re non-negotiable for my peace of mind. I prefer wired headphones day to day, but noise-cancelling Bluetooth headphones are essential for flights. You don’t need to go top of the line, but definitely find a pair that has reliable noise cancelling. I often have mine in without music playing, just so I don’t hear all the hustle and bustle of the plane.

A compact, high-wattage power adapter is crucial. Airplane outlets can be at weird angles, and bulky chargers often don’t fit properly. A small but powerful one means you can always keep your devices charged. You can usually find chargers, but I’ve had a few trips when everyone is crowding around the one charging pillar, so a portable battery pack is also worth considering, especially for long layovers when outlets are scarce, or you’re transferring between gates.

An easily packable tote is non-negotiable for me. I’m not fussy about built-in pockets since I use bag organizers, but it needs to fit the essentials: laptop or iPad, water bottle, makeup bag, and maybe a book and travel documents.

A good quality, reusable water bottle that you can fill after security saves you from paying airport prices and keeps you hydrated throughout the flight; I also like packing flavored electrolytes to remind myself to drink more water.”
