Van life adventures for two go beyond what a weekend trip usually requires. There are thousands of travel sites offering last-minute weekend offers everywhere, from near your home or a few hundred miles away from your city. However, when it comes to booking overseas adventure travel, you need more than a click-and-book package. You need to consider a few key elements, including flight prices, cancellation terms, and even travel insurance, in case things go unplanned.

Van Life Adventure For Two Committed to Strengthening Their Long-Term Relationship

Darren and Kayla have been traveling full-time in a van together for almost five years. For them, travel has always been an important part of their relationship, and they have extensively traveled in the US and internationally. Their travel experience touches both sides of what an overseas adventure means.

This brings the idea that most people ask themselves: do couples who travel together build stronger relationships than those who don’t take or rarely take trips?  If this could be true, how do travel couples expöain this phenomenon?

In Darren and Kayla’s experience, yes. They are of the idea that travel forces you outside your comfort zone, and being outside your comfort zone forces growth. For the last five years, they have lived a full-time travel lifestyle as a couple, driving all over the country in a Sprinter van. They add that their van life adventure has worked because they have put real effort into developing their communication skills and being empathetic to each other when challenges arise.

Slow Van Life Adventures Gives Couples A chance to Show Up Authentically

One interesting part of their van life experience is the unique opportunity to arrive somewhere new, where you do not know anyone, and there is always an opportunity to show up in the world more authentically. If nobody knows who you are, you can be anyone you want. In our experience, when you can show up as anyone you want, you tend to show up as yourself.

Darren committed to putting himself out into the world and sharing creativity. Kayla finally got the buzz cut she had wanted for years without caring what people would think. Travel created the conditions for those moments, and supporting each other through them deepened their connection in ways that staying home never would have. They additionally mention that they are far more confident in themselves, having gone through these experiences together.

When Stress Challenges Van Life Adventures

Does the way we navigate stress determine whether overseas adventure travel breaks or strengthens a relationship for two who have committed to exploring the world together?

When things get stressful, Darren and Kayla try to be graceful with each other, even when they find the other person grating or need to be more direct than normal. Being in constant close quarters has required them to let things go quicker and set clearer boundaries with each other.

Early in their van life adventures, they made a point to get up early, have coffee on the beach, and watch the sunrise. Darren remembers the experience being incredibly emotional, that they had made it, and that they were doing something with their lives that was different.

Darren emphasizes that many people dream of traveling full-time, and they have made it happen. Since then, the couple has had so many wonderful, bizarre, and trying moments. Everything they have experienced has made them closer as a couple, strengthening their ability to communicate and problem-solve together.

Long-Term Travel & Relationship Commitment in 6 m2 across 21 Countries.

Caro and Konrad have spent six months living in a 6m² VW campervan across 21 countries. Discussing the nature of the couple’s relationship and commitment to travel together, Konrad emphasizes that if they were not compatible, their relationship would have ended within a week.

Traveling Couples have Nothing to Hide in their Relationships.

The proximity strips everything back. One thing they have all discovered is the fact that you cannot hide who you are in a small space, and honestly, that is the point.  Travel does not build a strong relationship. It reveals whether one already exists, Konard highlights.

How someone handles frustration. In normal life, you can go to separate rooms, distract yourself, and let it pass. In a van, there is nowhere to go. He has learned that when something bothers him, the answer is almost never Caro. It is something he needs to process himself. He additionally mentions that most relationship conflict comes from taking internal frustration out on the person beside you. Travel removes the escape routes and forces you to deal with things properly.

Defining Moment for Traveling Couples

They had just crossed into Portugal after 15,000 kilometres and six months on the road. Caro was falling asleep in his arms, and Konrad was looking at her and just felt a wave of gratitude. He told her, “I loved her and that I was grateful for her”. She had not quite heard him and said “du, du, du, du”( you, you, you, you…translated from German) — and they both started laughing. Six months of travel, one country after another, and it all landed in that one quiet moment. Konrad thinks that it is what long-term travel does to a relationship. It accumulates. All of it becomes something the couple carries together.

Advice For Couples Considering Long-term Road Adventures

Konrad and Caro insist on one element before anything else: common interests matter. But what matters more is the ability to talk to one another honestly, to have enough trust that you can say what is bothering you without it becoming a battle. Konrad and Caro’s rule is simple: “as long as the relationship is building us both up, we keep going; the moment it starts pulling either of us down, that is when the real work begins.”

How do Normal Trip Takers see Adventure Abroad?

Ilkem Erul and his wife also take a multi-day trip once a year.

On the idea of trips that bring couples closer or not, they have a firsthand experience with overseas adventures for two. In their second month of living as a couple, they had a ten-day summer vacation. They noticed that it helped them to know each other better and build the trust needed to start this serious relationship that led to a happy marriage.

Every year, they have committed to going somewhere new for at least a week. It always helped them to get closer and learn something new about themselves.

Ilkem admits that leaving your comfort zone can sometimes lead to finding yourself in unexpected, bizarre situations. It shows how one reacts to those situations and whether they care for each other. It’s not something that you can experience while sitting in your living room.

And Some Adventure Travel Choices can Challenge Couples.

The most common conflict couples face while traveling does not mean there is a compatibility issue.

Ilkem’s wife is the energetic one. She wants to discover everything and stay active during a vacation. Ilkem prefers to rest more and discover when you feel a bit recharged. So, it’s important to see if both parties can compromise a bit.

And sometimes “dream destinations” increase pressure due to excessive travel expectations.

They went to Bali. As a couple, they have noticed that if one party has been dreaming of visiting this place for a long time, it definitely creates some pressure. As a way of easing emotions for a seamless travel experience, Ilkem and his wife believe that the other party needs to understand that their partner has high expectations and must be more flexible regarding their own choices.

Ilkem noticed that there is an important balance in their relationship. His wife loves to plan everything in advance. She works long hours before the trip and doesn’t ask for help. Ilkem does things differently. His role involves creating ad-hoc plans and destinations based on the current situation.

She gets nervous when something deviates from the plan, but he has learned to remain calmer and can react effectively in those cases. So, she expects her husband to step up and take the lead if something happens. There is a defining moment in every travel couple experience, and each has its own.

Ilkem knows that his wife always wants to be active during vacations. He recalls that when they were in Amsterdam for a 12-day vacation, she told him one morning that she was okay staying at the hotel that day if he wanted to, since he had mostly followed her lead for the first few days.

What do Couples Therapy Experts Advise Couples who Take Adventure Trips

Taking trips together doesn’t have the same effect on every couple’s relationship.

Heather Z. Lyons, PhD, Managing Director at Baltimore Therapy Group, emphasizes that it depends on how couples handle stress. Do they come together to solve problems? Roll with the punches? Get irritable? Crave routine in unrealistic ways?

Couples who navigate stress and challenges well together will emerge from travel stronger. It’s also worth saying that couples who decide to travel together are likely already comfortable with intimacy and transparency. You’re really inviting someone into your inner world when traveling.  Travel can accelerate what’s already there. If you communicate well, navigating challenges together will build the sense that you’re a team. If you don’t, being stuck together 24/7 in stressful situations can expose cracks in the foundation.
