Google Begins Testing AI-Powered Hotel Booking as Travel Industry Enters Agentic Era
Google has begun testing an artificial intelligence system that can book hotels on behalf of users, marking a significant step toward a travel industry in which AI agents do more than recommend trips โ they complete transactions.
The limited test, launched this week for a small percentage of U.S. users, allows Googleโs AI Mode to handle hotel-booking tasks. Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel said Booking.com is among the early partners involved in the test. Google confirmed the test to Skift but declined to provide additional details.
The development is one of the clearest signs yet that so-called agentic AI is moving from travel-industry experiments into real-world commerce.
Unlike conventional travel chatbots, agentic systems are designed to take action. Instead of simply telling a traveler which hotels are available, an AI agent can potentially search inventory, compare options based on the userโs preferences and ultimately complete a booking.
That shift could reshape the relationship between travelers, hotels, airlines and online travel agencies.
From search to transaction
For decades, travelers have largely followed the same digital path: Search for a destination, visit multiple websites, compare prices and make a reservation.
AI agents could compress that process into a conversation.
A traveler might ask an AI assistant to find a hotel near a meeting, within a specified budget and with particular amenities. Rather than returning a list of websites, the agent could make the selection and execute the transaction through a participating travel company.
Industry analysts have increasingly identified this transition as a major change in travel distribution. IDC has predicted that AI agents could execute 30% of travel bookings by 2030.
Googleโs latest move gives that prediction a more immediate dimension.
A new battle for the traveler
The technology also raises an important question for the travel industry: Who owns the customer when an AI agent makes the decision?
Hotels and online travel agencies have historically competed to appear prominently in search results and persuade travelers to book directly through their platforms.
Agentic AI potentially changes that model. The traveler may interact primarily with the AI while the hotel, airline or OTA becomes the underlying supplier.
Booking.com has been preparing for that shift while working with major AI platforms. Fogel said the company is working with Google as well as other AI platforms, including ChatGPT and Gemini, to remain part of the booking process.
Other travel companies are pursuing similar strategies. Expedia Group has opened parts of its inventory to partners building AI agents, including through an MCP-based connection designed to let outside systems access travel inventory.
Airlines are joining the race as Google Tests AI Hotel Booking
The move toward agentic travel is not limited to hotels.
Ryanair announced a five-year partnership with Google Cloud this month that will expand the airlineโs use of AI, including Googleโs Gemini technology and DeepMind models. The airline plans to apply the technology to areas including crew scheduling, fleet operations, maintenance planning and automated decision-making.
That points to a broader transformation in which AI is increasingly involved not only in how travelers buy trips, but also in how airlines and hotels operate them.
Travel technology company OAG said in a recent analysis that airline technology is increasingly designed to reduce duplicated checks, handoffs and questions across the travel journey.
The trust problem
The technologyโs biggest obstacle may not be technical.
Travelers have to trust an AI to spend their money and make consequential decisions on their behalf.
That is particularly significant for business travel, where an AI agent could eventually be expected to understand corporate policies, traveler preferences, budgets and approval requirements before making a booking.
A recent analysis from Forbes highlighted trust as a key factor in the adoption of AI for business travel.
For consumers, the stakes can be just as high. A mistake in a hotel booking may be inconvenient. A mistaken international flight, missed connection or nonrefundable reservation can be considerably more costly.
The next travel-tech battleground
Googleโs hotel experiment therefore represents more than another AI feature.
It is an early test of a potentially new travel distribution model in which AI becomes the front door to travel.
Search engines, online travel agencies and hotel websites once competed to control the travelerโs path from discovery to booking. Now, AI agents could sit between the traveler and all of them.
The companies that control the inventory, payments, customer relationship and AI interface will have a major advantage.
For travelers, the promise is simple: fewer searches, fewer forms and less time spent comparing options.
For the travel industry, however, the question is much bigger:
When an AI makes the booking, who gets to decide where the traveler goes?
