Do Couples Who Travel Together Stay Together? What Travel Reveals About Relationships

Meredith and her husband have been traveling together full-time for more than two years as travel bloggers, so they’ve got perspective both as a real-life couple and travel professionals on the” Do Couples Who Travel Together Stay Together?” topic.

On the question most traveling couples ask, whether couples who travel together tend to build stronger relationships or not, Meredith thinks travel can expose who you are underneath the veneer – who are you under stress, and how strong is your relationship really? It’s like a test to see how you’ll handle life’s other big challenges. But she also doesn’t think travel necessarily makes you stronger as a couple – it just exposes whether the strength was already there, or if, when things get tough, the cracks start to show.

Travel settings usually challenge the daily life routine a couple is used to. The number one thing that traveling as a couple reveals is how you communicate under pressure.  When you’re about to miss your flight, are you supportive of your partner or snapping at them?

“I’ve cried at an airport more than once, and I knew my husband was a keeper when he comforted me instead of rolling his eyes or being embarrassed.”

There are times when travel or unexpected situations created by travel pressure can break relationships, or take a positive turn to strengthen the couple’s relationship. What patterns have traveling couples seen so far? Absolutely – the stresses when travel goes wrong can reveal the worst of you.  Even when things are on track, waking up for a 6 am flight or tour can make you short and snappy. Sometimes, a couple learns to give each other grace, and sometimes they see a side of their partner that they haven’t seen before, which leads them to break up.

And traveling to dream destinations increases expectations and indeed puts pressure on relationships when things to do don’t end up reflecting the pre-made emotional travel experiences. 100%. “Dream destinations” come pre-packaged with a whole lot of preconceived notions and high expectations, a situation ripe for disappointment. When you’ve poured thousands of dollars into the trip, that disappointment can lead to arguments or blaming the other for the situation.

Meredith and her husband found that traveling to hidden gem destinations, like their time traveling in Montenegro, led to the most joy and romance, as everything they did was a surprise that they discovered together.  Plus, “dream destinations” often come with a long checklist of sites and activities that leave you exhausted – when you visit somewhere “undiscovered,” you feel freer to explore at your own pace.

Planning overseas trips reveals decision-making and intentional communication gaps. Absolutely. Travel planning has been one of the most revealing things in our relationship when it comes to our communication styles and decision-making, and the self-awareness we’ve gained has been excellent for the health of our relationship.

Travel planning really put into plain view that my husband is the “big ideas” guy and I’m all about the details, and we’ve used that learning to structure travel planning and other life-planning and decision-making to reduce stress on us both.  Choosing where to travel is overwhelming and stressful for me, but fun for him, while I thrive on building a detailed itinerary, and he hates it.  Learning this has made all of our big decisions and life plans easier to manage.

How Ruth Met Her Husband While Traveling in Jamaica

How Ruth Met Her Husband While Traveling in Jamaica

Ruth and her husband actually met while traveling. They both swiped right on Bumble while vacationing in Jamaica in 2020. Ruth’s dating profile at the time said: Must have a valid passport that you have used recently.
The man who later became her husband lived in Detroit at the time, and she lived in Seattle. They did the long-distance thing for several years, meeting in each other’s towns or somewhere in between. Ruth used to joke that they had a “vacationship.” He has since moved to Seattle, and they got married in 2023. They take multiple trips every year, almost always together. For his 50th birthday, Ruth took him on a 9-week round-the-world trip.

She has an idea of traveling with a couple and building a strong relationship.

Yes, why do couples who love taking trips together have a chance to know more about themselves and possibly grow a stronger relationship? Travel is one of the best ways, I think, to gauge whether or not you can stand to be with someone.

She does not think travel reveals realities about a relationship that everyday life often hides. Instead, she believes travel enhances it by revealing someone’s preferences – sleeping in vs getting up early, etc. The sad truth is that some relationships break, not to say that traveling couples can learn how to compromise for a healthy relationship, but yes, she’s seen friendships ruined or strained when travel doesn’t go well, and also she’s experienced travel enhancing relationships.

What do Couples Therapists Think of Traveling Together and Maintaining Healthy Relationships

How does a couple avoid the most conflict couples face while traveling?

Heather Z. Lyons, PhD, shares what she hears most often, and that is the divide between the partner who loves to be on the go, seeing everything, learning what they can, and the partner who wants to relax by the pool. This can reflect differential levels of demand in their day-to-day lives as well as deeper differences in temperament and what they value in experiences.

Handling stress and remaining committed to making the travel experience and relationship enjoyable in unfamiliar destinations

In general, people tend to go external or internal when stressed. Those who tend to go external can get controlling or look for reassurance from others. Those who go internal can look like they’re shut down, dismissive, unavailable, or irritable. Obviously, if partners tend toward different strategies, this can create a push-pull dynamic that can lead to its own problems.

Avoiding pressure originating from dream destination expectations.

It depends. If couples build up dream destinations unrealistically, they might wonder if something is wrong with the relationship when reality doesn’t match the fantasy. For that reason, Heather thinks some reality testing ahead of time will be important. For example, remembering that these dream destinations often come with jet lag, cultural misunderstandings, and language barriers, which can create some crankiness and frustration, can be helpful.

The choice of traveling style, adventure, luxury, backpacking, or road trips can also impact how couples handle unexpected situations.

Heather also emphasizes that it depends on what couples want to get out of the trip. She tends to think that road trips are underrated. You’ve got the flexibility to change course, you’re moving on your own schedule, and the stakes are low.
