These working abroad travel experiences reveal how living and working overseas can boost your career, ignite personal growth, and create stories youโll tell for a lifetime.
When readers think of life-changing travel stories, few are as compelling as the journey of those who have transformed their careers while exploring the world. For many, working abroad travel experiences are more than just a resume boosterโthey are a deep immersion into new cultures, unexpected challenges, and personal growth.
From stepping off the plane in Malaysia after years with an NGO to navigating the high-pressure world of luxury tourism in Bali, these experiences reveal both the excitement and reality of living overseas. Along the way, lessons from Thailandโs slower-paced lifestyle, Peruโs vibrant culture, and the immersive life in South Korea show how saying yes to opportunities abroad can reshape careers, spark new passions, and open doors that were never visible from home. This is the story of how travel can change not just a destination, but the course of a life.
Why I Left My NGO Career in Malaysia After Five Years of Traveling in Southeast Asia
by Lynne Lessard

After five years traveling in Southeast Asia (and beyond) while working as Digital Marketing Manager for a global NGO based in Malaysia, I stepped into what I thought was the ultimate role: Director of Public Relations at a luxury resort in Bali. My work with the NGO was meaningful and purpose-driven, but after five years, I was ready for change, and the PR Director title felt like an exciting next step into a new industry that has always been of interest to me.
What Itโs Really Like Working in a Luxury Resort in Bali (Reality vs Expectations)
But working in high-end luxury tourism wasnโt what I imagined. The pressure was high, yet the goals were unclear, and it wasn’t rewarding at all, the way my previous jobs were. Plus, I found myself trading island sunsets for evenings in a windowless office… not what I expected when moving to a tropical island!

More importantly, I realized I didnโt feel connected to the kind of tourism I was promoting there. It wasnโt aligned with who I am, and my NGO work and travels overseas had changed me, too. They had shown me the power of community-based tourism, of conversations with local guides, and of experiences that connect people instead of isolating and dividing them.
Then came the moment I realized my dream job abroad wasn’t right.
When that role came to an abrupt end, I realized it was the push I needed. I didnโt want to market travel that felt exclusive and detached; I wanted to help create travel that connects people to culture, nature, and each other. Travelynne began as a hobby blog, but after that turning point, I expanded it into a travel planning service.
From Travel Blog to Travel Business: Building a Purpose-Driven Travel Brand

I began collaborating with local guides and locally owned hotels to create itineraries that are rooted in responsible travel and offer meaningful experiences. The practical steps were both natural and intentional: I clarified my values, shifted my positioning, built partnerships with local operators, and leaned into building a business aligned with the kind of tourism I believe in. Today, Travelynne helps travelers plan memorable trips that create a positive impact for both visitors and the communities that welcome them.
Leaving a Corporate Career for Travel: Vanlife in the USA and Moving Abroad
There is more interesting background as well – such as leaving my job as Deputy Press Secretary in Canada for a year of ‘vanlife’ in the USA before I moved to Asia, and my journey learning the Indonesian language to improve local connections, and more!
Traveling the World and Career Transformation Stories: Saying Yes to Opportunities
by Dr. Alexandra Solea
How Traveling Across Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East Shapes Careers

My path to becoming an arts manager was never intentionally designed; it was built one flight at a time. Coming from Bucharest, Romania, and settling in Rome, Italy, to pursue my PhD studies at “La Sapienza” University, I have quickly learned that the most impactful professional education was not happening in the classroom, but in the dialogue at various festivals, conferences, and cultural organizations around Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East.
How Travel Enhances Career Growth in Arts, Culture, and Education

Traveling the world, however, did not change my dream; it merely enhanced it. What started as my love for music and cultural research has grown into my international career in the fields of arts management, cultural diplomacy, and higher education. Soleart Management was founded in Rome, Italy, after years of working with various organizations such as the George Enescu Festival, Rome Opera House, and BOZAR Brussels, all of which came from simply being present, getting into dialogue, and being willing to engage in unexpected conversations in unexpected settings.
Why Saying Yes to Travel Opportunities Can Change Your Career Path
The most practical thing I have learned has been to say yes also to the invitation you don’t feel quite ready for. A workshop in Shanghai, a conference in Doha, a roundtable in Warsaw, a panel in Cairo or Cape Breton, all of them opened doors I had no idea existed.
Working Internationally: From Bucharest to Rome and Beyond
Today, I work from Bucharest and Rome. I am Director at Rome Business School, Associate Professor at the National University of Music in Bucharest, Doctoral Dissertation Chair at Westcliff and Edgewood Universities in the USA, and mentor the next generation of cultural leaders at the GRAMMYs and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.
None of this was in the plan. All of it came from the willingness to say yes and travel.
Quitting a 9โ5 Job to Travel the World: Building a Travel Lifestyle Business
by Veronica De La Puente
How Travel Inspired Us to Leave Corporate Jobs and Rethink Life
My husband and I have always loved to travel, and our life goal has always been to save enough money so we could eventually travel the world. When we were younger, I wanted to be the next Kara and Nate on YouTube.
But coming from immigrant families who expected us to get traditional 9-5 corporate jobs after graduating from university, it was a distant dream. I pursued my career in PR, while my husband went into the semiconductor industry, working in supply chain. Our dream was still to travel, but we settled on accruing our PTO to be able to take one big trip abroad per year and traveling full-time once we retired.
Traveling to Thailand and Peru: The Turning Point
It wasnโt until we went to two of our favorite travel destinations that we realized a shift. We took our honeymoon in Thailand, and it taught us about the beauty of life. We saw a slower-paced lifestyle where people embrace other cultures and smile more. Itโs something we wanted for ourselves, but we knew we had jobs waiting for us back home.
A few months after we got back from Thailand, I started a new job that completely drained me. We started questioning why we were postponing the life we were excited about. We booked a trip to Peru, so we had something new to look forward to. When we got to Peru, instead of just relaxing, we found ourselves brainstorming how to build a career in the travel industry instead of waiting decades to enjoy it.

We explored everything from becoming freelance travel agents to moving abroad to becoming tour guides. Then, it hit us. Our passion is travel, and my husband has always had a love for real estate. We spent an entire day walking around Lima looking for โFor Saleโ signs on condos to see if we could buy a real estate investment property to turn into an Airbnb.
Starting a Travel Business Inspired by Global Experiences
We didnโt have the capital to buy properties around the world, so we started researching property management instead. Thatโs when we decided to help real estate investors turn their properties into meaningful guest experiences while staying connected to the travel industry we love. This idea made us feel like we hit the jackpot.
When we got back from Peru, we really hit the ground running and dove into this business idea headfirst. Coming home after our 9-5 jobs, we worked together to create our business plan, our logo, our operations playbook, our website, build our network by joining real estate networking clubs, and more. Itโs early, and DLP Home & Host is still in the building phase, but travel changed our timeline. It pushed us to stop waiting for the perfect moment and start creating something now. Our goal is to be able to run our business anywhere and be able to travel ourselves while creating unforgettable travel experiences for others.
From Recruiter to Travel Writer: How Working Abroad Changed My Life
by Eryn Gordon
Losing a Job and Finding a New Path Through Travel

I’m a travel writer, founder of Earth To Editorial, a global community for authentic tourism, and a TEDx speaker. But less than six years ago, I was working in my home state as a recruiter.
Despite how good I was at professional recruiting, I had sacrificed most of my twenties to my jobโI stopped traveling and gave up most of my social life in hopes that I would save enough to travel more in my thirties. In 2020, I hadn’t left the country in nearly eight years.
Everything changed when the pandemic hit. I was laid off within a few weeks of the quarantine mandates. I was stuck at home and with nothing to show for the time, I had given up. Eager to make up for lost time, I earned a TEFL certification and, within six months of being laid off, became an English teacher in South Korea.
Becoming an Expat in South Korea and Building a Travel Writing Career
I began writing about my experiences as an expatriate alongside teaching, and these stories were picked up by Wanderlust UK, Fodor’s, and Matador Network. By the end of my teaching year, I pivoted into the tourism industry, where I’m now a writer and founder.
Final Thoughts: What are your working abroad travel experiences stories the world needs to hear?
Working abroad travel experiences often come with uncertainty, long hours, and cultural adjustments, but they also bring unparalleled rewards. For those willing to embrace change, every flight to Rome, every vanlife adventure across the USA, and every conversation with local guides in Southeast Asia offers insight, growth, and connection. These experiences transform careers, inspire travel businesses, and teach the value of meaningful engagement over mere sightseeing.
By stepping outside familiar routines and choosing purposeful travel, individuals discover more than new destinationsโthey uncover new versions of themselves, ready to blend passion with profession. The lessons learned abroad linger long after the journey ends, proving that travel isnโt just a story to tellโitโs a story that reshapes how we live, work, and connect with the world.
