Mobile Flight Bookings Central to Airline Travel, IATA Finds—Over Half of Travelers Prefer Using Apps for Booking and Payments, and 78% Want Smartphones to Handle Everything from Loyalty Rewards to Boarding, Showing How Mobile Is Completely Transforming the Passenger Journey.
Mobile Flight Bookings Now “Central” to Airline Travel, IATA Finds
Mobile devices are becoming the hub of the modern airline passenger experience, according to new research from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The study shows travelers increasingly rely on smartphones to manage nearly every aspect of their journey—from booking flights and paying for tickets to handling loyalty programs, check-in, immigration, boarding, and baggage.
“Enthusiasm for mobile-enabled travel is higher than ever,” IATA said.
Travelers Shift Toward Mobile Apps
Booking and payment habits are moving decisively to mobile. Over half of travelers (54%) now prefer to engage directly with airlines, often through mobile apps.
Airline websites remain popular, chosen by 31% of travelers, though that’s down from 37% last year. Web apps are growing in appeal, with 19% of passengers using them in 2025, up from 16% in 2024.
Younger travelers are leading the shift—25% favor mobile-first solutions—signaling that mobile adoption is likely to keep growing.
Payment methods are evolving too. Credit and debit cards still dominate at 72%, but that’s a drop from 79% in 2024. Digital wallets are on the rise, increasing from 20% to 28%, while instant payment options like IATA Pay grew from 6% to 8%.
Digital Identity and Seamless Airport Experiences
Passengers are increasingly looking for integrated mobile solutions. About 78% want a single smartphone that combines a digital wallet, digital passport, and loyalty cards to book, pay, and navigate airport processes.
Electronic bag tags are also gaining traction, rising from 28% in 2024 to 35% in 2025. This lets travelers generate tags directly from their mobile devices during check-in.
Biometrics and digital identity tools are expanding across airports, creating faster, more seamless experiences—something passengers clearly appreciate, the study found.
Europe Lags but Remains Satisfied
IATA’s survey highlights regional differences. European travelers remain more cautious, preferring airline websites for bookings and credit or debit cards for payment. They are the least likely to have used biometrics over the past year and remain hesitant to replace travel documents with digital alternatives.
Still, European travelers rank as the fourth most satisfied globally, showing that caution doesn’t necessarily hinder a positive travel experience.
The Importance of Trust
Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior VP for Operations, Safety, and Security, emphasized the need for secure digital experiences:
“Passengers want to manage travel the same way they manage other aspects of their lives—on smartphones and with digital ID. As digital processes expand from booking to baggage claim, the message is clear: travelers like it, and they want more of it.
“Cybersecurity is crucial. Building trust is essential as airlines transform the end-to-end travel experience digitally—from booking and payment to airport navigation.”
